School Yard Brawls Ain't What They Use To Be

I just saw on the news that local elementary schools are now teaching "bullying prevention strategies". Somehow I'm thinking they don't include:
-A punch to the adam's apple
-A good swift kick in the ba**s
-A 1 pound rock to the head (in your best baseball throw)
-A closed fist clubbing to the temple

I guess it's a sign of the times. Bully's are best 'understood' rather than beat up or punished. It makes me sick that, around here, a zero tolerance policy on schoolyard fighting includes suspending the kid that defends himself.

Yea Pipe,
In my day a bully would be stopped with a punch in the face. Most times it would straighten him out and we would become good friends. I was even taught to stick up for myself by my parents. And when I did something real bad I'd get the belt. I think I got it twice in my childhood. But it is something I will never forget. One of the times it made me piss my pants. Todays kids are growing up a bit differently. I see the results in our papers every day.

It's all about sink or swim. When a bully figures out he's got a swimmer, 9 out 10 times.....he runs.

Growing up, I used to get into bullies, I'd even play meek so they would push a little further, wouldn't want them giving up early, would I? plus it made a good show when I put the hammer down.

Nothing like a good show.

Can older brothers be bullies?

My brother used to beat the s**t out of me and when I started to be able to take it and dish it back out he stopped.

God love older brothers.

4th grade, when I was the new kid in school, this black girl start slugging the crap out of me. I didn't know what to do, I wasn't going to hit a girl but this chic was kicking my a$$. So I put her in a head lock and we went to the floor. Teacher broke it up and the whole damn class was saying "man you can fight! nobodies ever beat up Jackey!" I had to say "Dudes........it was girl."

When I was in kindergarten some big fat second grader was starting to bully me around. I slugged him in the face and gave him a bloody nose. Never had a problem after that!
Last year when my daughter was four she came home with a large bite wound on her face from another kid. When I asked her what she did while the kid was biting her she said "nothing". I told her it's OK to hit someone for that kind of behavior and I DON'T feel bad about that!

Around here that'd get you at least a couple of meetings with the school counselors and probably several hours worth of county funded 'sensitivity' training if the school administrators got wind of it.

I hear ya, Rich. Interesting bit on the radio today concerning a father/child confrontation when the child threatened to call 911 for abuse. Pops called the Sheriff's Dept. first and had a Deputy wise up the kid before standing by outside just in case the teen had any more questions. Beautiful!

BTW, I smacked my oldest daughters butt exactly once and the fear trickled down.

That's the story of most bullies... they don't want to work hard for it, they will just move onto the next person who won't fight back.

I was bullied most of my childhood until I started fighting back. I wish I had fought back sooner.

I just don't think it's wrong for a child to defend themselves if they are getting hurt. I don't condone throwing the first punch.

One day in 5th or 6th grade I happened upon an excellent "bullying prevention strategy"
I grabbed a cafeteria chair and lifted it over my head to pound the bully with it
At that point, a teacher walked in and stopped me, but I never had a problem with the guy after that

Right.

I think my Dad's words were "I don't want you to start a fight, but if someone starts a fight with you, make sure you finish it."

It always worked for me, I was never bullied by the same person more than once.

I plan to teach my kids the same thing, but I don't think my boy will have any problems, he's already got big ass hands that'll be good for clubbin.

Re: School Yard Brawls Ain't What They Use To Be

When I was in the 9th grade, a senior accused me of stealing his pager. To this day, I know I didnt do it. He was waiting for me at my bus stop when school was done. Needless to say he beat me up pretty bad. Theres a big differance between the size of a freshmen compared to a senior.

About four years later, I was working at a carwash when I noticed him washing his car. I was a little more grown up at the time so I decided to get a little payback. I was ready to go to jail I was so furious. I walked up to him with one of those "the club" anti theft locks that somebody had left at the carwash. He jumped in his car and ran with soap still all over it. I never did get a chance to pay him back for what he did to me, but I did get a good laugh and that was fine for me.

Phil, your age is showing. We didn't have the concept of a pager when I was in 9th grade. I guess that my age is showing too! LOL

Teetor, you didn't have pagers in grade school? Hell, I wouldn't go anywhere without my homing pigeon cage.

Re: School Yard Brawls Ain't What They Use To Be

When I was in the 6th grade there was a kid trying to bully me. All it took was one encounter to make him stop and I didn't even have to throw a punch. He punched me with all his might right in the cheek and without an ouch or a tear I just turned my head back toward him with a mad as hell look and I was going to beat the crap out of him but he ran away before I got the chance. He never touched me again.
