Really Rough Lumber??

I've got an off-the-wall question that maybe someone can give some insight. I've got some trees that need to come down (5 or 6) in a natural area on my property. There are three oaks, one is not a pretty specimen. Dunno what the other two are, they look like they're dying anyway. However, I have two oaks that are both 60-75 feet tall and perfectly straight. One goes up probably 50 feet before the first branch and is about two feet in diameter. I'm just not comfortable, as I think it may be leaning toward my house. I know an arborist or someone like davey tree will come chop them up, but I was just wondering if there was any trade value in straight mature oak like that. The challenge is not to disturb too much of the new growth around them, as they give a great buffer from the street.

Any idea of who might be interested? Comments? I can post pictures if you want to see.

Thanks.

Neil

These oaks, depending what kind they are might be veener quality
and might bring top price at a veneer mill. Go to the Woodmizer
sawmill web site and find a sawmiller in your area that will come and cut them down
and saw them up.

Re: Really Rough Lumber??

Most of the property near my NC home is sold by the acre and bd/ft. of timber. Mature oaks are worth a lot to somebody.

I planted Black Walnuts on my property because a 20 yr. old tree that can be verified would bring around $3.5K. I did it as a backup plan for my kids education, they are now 25 yrs. old and getting more valuable every year.

Wow! Now that is one you aren't going to hear about from a financial planner at Meril Lynch.

That is a cool, cool idea for a college education fund! Hell, even a retirement fund!

You could probably get more/save more if you sold the kids!

Re: Really Rough Lumber??

Here's the only digital shot I have right now. Will take more in the morning. This picture was taken 5 years ago from a block away. The tallest tree in the middle of the group (on the right of the photo) is still standing, there's another just to the right that isn't quite as tall. The one on the left (kinda twisted) hangs over the driveway. The one on the far right took a bolt of lightning two years ago and came down wednesday night in a windstorm. Fortunately, noone or nothing was in its path. It now has a 20 foot stump.

Re: Really Rough Lumber??

The original 5.52 acres that I bought had about 2.5 acres leveled, that's where I planted. Also put in some pecans (Stewart and papershells), apples, pears, blackberrys, blueberrys, asparagus then bought the 7.4 acres that adjoined it. All original old woods, how it escaped the axe God only knows. There is an oak in there that is close to 10' in diameter, more Black Walnuts, Hickorys, Poplar, Persimmon..old forest and it borders on a creek. Later, I picked up another 4 acres on the other side of the creek for $600., also old forest.
The NC house when purchased, 1978.

View from the master bath window. The original lot ended at the tree line ahead, trees to the right are on the property. You can see plenty of room for trees.

The driveway, I'm back in there a ways. Almost 3/4 mi. to the county road.

4 acres for $600?

Sounds like you will do much better with the land then you would do selling the trees.
Sell an acre, send the kids to school.

Nice!

That land was inaccessable to most purchasers, mine abutted it. There were only 3 people that could have purchased it and the other 2 didn't want it.

Re: Really Rough Lumber??

more pics of trees. Perfect example of clearcutting for a neighborhood and leaving a small group. The new growth below offers a good buffer from the side street, its also on the eastern side of my property, so its morning shade that I'll lose. I now feel like I'm playing russian roulette with them.

The first shot shows the base of the two biggest ones, with whats left of the third tall one. The second shows the group, with the one on the far right twisting out over my driveway. The peak of my house is about 30' up, and the woods drop down about 8-10' from my driveway.

More opinions? Bids?

I'm not a Greenpeace enviromentalist by any stretch of the imagination. I do understand the role of trees and animals (us included) as part of a balanced planet.

My little piece of NC will continue to be harvested of plants and animals. It will be maintained as Mother Earth and Father Sky intended.

Re: Really Rough Lumber??

In my uneducated opinion, the trees aren't worth harvesting. They are not wide enough, judging from the picture.
