Out Of Control Car

I may just be a contractor but someone should be smart enough to let out to the general public to JUST TURN THE KEY OFF! and the car will stop instead of driving 30 miles at 90 mph and calling 911 to have a cop get ahead of you and stop you with his patrol car. It was on the Today show this morning.

Just put the car in neutral, pull over and stop the vehicle then turn off the ignition, if you turn the key to far it will lock the steering column.

Apparently there are a lot of stupid people driving cars.

Re: Out Of Control Car

I dont think my truck will let the key turn that far to lock the steering if it is still in gear. But anyway good advice to the general population that can't figure that out.

I was kinda wondering why people are having such a problem with this. I guess its true that "common sense isn't nearly as common as the name implies"

It shouldn't, if the car is still in gear then it will prevent the key from turning to the lock position. You are correct that it will reduce power to the brake booster causing you to loose power assisted brakes. And as you loose engin speed the power steering will loose power.

All cars are designed for the brakes to over power then engine.....hit the brakes!

I think the trouble is we arn't prepared for it, everyone knows to turn it off, or put in neutral etc etc but not when you panic! When your heart rate rises you can't think straight and you are practically paralyzed.

I tried it in my truck, if it is in gear, it will not lock the steering column.

My wife had an accelerator stick, she called me and I told her to put it in neutral pull over and turn off the engine, she was very panicked but calm enough to call me and follow directions as to what to do.

Re: Out Of Control Car

Common sense- aint so common, but even just putting the car in neutral will be fine- retain pwr steering/pwr brakes AND since all cars/trucks are equipped with rev limiters, it is'nt hurting a dang thing. You'd think after 30 miles, that tool woulda had plenty of time to do some deductive thinking and get it halted.....conspiracey theory?? maybe the gobbernment tampered with the car

Re: Out Of Control Car

one of the reports I saw on this said the key would turn but the engine would not turn off and the gear selector would move but the gear would not change. Apparently both the ignition switch and the gear selection filter through the brain on some of these cars so there is no direct mechanical connection.

Then get both feet on the brake!

Impressive, if that happened to my lady she would be getting the steering wheel surgically removed from her mouth. I had an old VW that the throttle cable would stick on occasionally and I got good at turning it off and pulling over.

Re: Out Of Control Car

I have a Camry that the wife drives. Took it in for another service issue and they added a couple of recalls. One was the accelerator pedal "reshaping". All they did was cut the bottom of the pedal off! What kind of ghetto fix is that?

Re: Out Of Control Car

There's no fricken way that the gear shift wouldn't move (assuming it was an Automatic) and the brakes wouldn't be powerful enough to stop it even after they faded a bit. Maybe cars should be fitted with a fuel dump feature like planes have? Big red button in the middle of the steering wheel or something.

Don't know why they can't shift into neutral. Did it on my wife's camry just to see how easy it was. So easy a baby can tap it into neutral.

Re: Out Of Control Car

Years ago, my cousin had an old POS beater and he was driving home from college when his throttle stuck.

This car also will not start again if you shut it off until it cools down.

He was smart enough to know what was going on, and he limped it the entire way home with the throttle stuck, when he needed to slow down he would pop it in neutral and it would just redline at stoplights and stuff, then he would just ride the brakes to keep his speed under control. HAHA

Im not saying this is safe by any means, hes lucky he didnt lose the brakes, If your throttle sticks drop it in neutral and pull over and hit the key, but I can only sit here and laugh at the sight of my cousin driving that thing for like 40 minutes home with the throttle stuck, I would have loved to be beside him at a stoplight with that thing bouncing off the rev limiter, then take off like a bat out of hell time and time again.

I guess when he got home that thing was just glowing red.

Re: Out Of Control Car

Something fishy about this latest throttle sticking in CA. I think the guy was setting things up for a lawsuit myself.

Re: Out Of Control Car

Who knows what to believe here. I've heard the throttle gets stuck under the floor mat and I've heard it's an electronic problem that over rides everything. You can't shut if off or put it in neutral because it's not a cable from the gear selector to the transmission it's electronic.

Just seems mighty fishy that as soon as the gov gets ahold of GM all of a sudden one of the best selling cars in America is a death trap .

The only thing I believe that I hear on the news any more is that someone got killed (don't necessarily believe the stories about how they got killed) or I've been duped into believing the weather man a time or two !
