Dry rub, slow smoked, mesquite wood. Good meat helps too. In some parts of the country BBQ means smoked pig meat, here we BBQ everything. You can get beef, pork, sausage & chicken at most BBQ joints. In the backyard it could be wildgame, seafood & veggies too.

You can get Texas BBQ up there too, just check out www.saltlickbbq.com

The only animal I've ever knifed was already dead and butchered....And pretty cold.

Hey I understand your skepticism. I can't believe you guys can survive the rush hour traffic of NYC or Atlanta or Charlotte.

Their are a couple of problems w/ videotaping this whole process. First it is kind of the antithesis of what the hunt is all about. It's man vs. nature not worldwide viewing audience vs nature. I didn't grow up in the youtube generation. Secondly convincing people to come with me has been difficult. Thirdly if I could find volunteers to videotape this whole thing they would not have the necessary woodsman skills and get us both killed. This is not a game!

Really the only proof I have are some still photos, some scars, and the deep down satisfaction I have of being unique in the world of bear hunting.

Probably the closest thing video wise I have is a short segment I did for John West Salmon in 1999. They somehow heard of my aggressive nature in dealing with bears and so hired me to shoot a commercial for them. Understand though that this video has been edited from what really happened quite a bit, but in real life it was quite the adrenaline rush as I'm not in the habit of working with bears when they are awake and hungry. All in all I wish I would've never done their segment. It kinda cheapened the whole experience for me.

Is it typical of bears to take a boxing stance like that? I thought they would just maul you and eat you, but you also have to be on the lookout for a spinning back kick????

(I intended to quote the original video, not putty's reaction)

It's not as unusual as you would think.

Case in Point:

and

http://www.stupidvideos.com/video/animals/Bear_Boxing/

Like I mentioned there were a lot of things they didn't tell me on this shoot. I was prepared to do this with a wild bear in his natural habitat, but they imported a bear that was used to the circus circuit, if I remember correctly his name was bonzo the blackbelt. If you look closely you can see the salmon being launched out of the stream... etc etc. Like I said it really cheapened the whole experience for me. I vowed after this experience to never commercialize my skills again!!!!

There's only two things I've heard of that would compare:

Story # 1: I was reading a book on our family history in Germany during the 1300's. (My brother is a genealogist of sorts.) Anyway, there is a story in there that seems utterly ridiculous, but was corroborated in two books. So I guess that makes it true....or well-documented legend. The story is that this man was a "bodyguard" for a German king (I'm not sure which king, but the book does say.) The book actually said that he wasn't too bright, but was a giant of a man, so being a body guard seems appropriate. On a hunting trip a bear rushed the king, and this man saved the kings life by jumping on the back of the bear and strangling it to death. Now, two things seem apparent to me at this point:

1) That bear couldn't have possibly been the size of the bear in your photo.

or

2) The man's name was Goliath.

At any rate, there is solid documentation that this guy received a castle from the king as a gift, so apparently he did save the king's life, whether it involved choking a bear or not!

Story # 2: (This one I know is true!) A man from our church was in Africa as an invitee of several governments. He is a biologist, and a respected hunter, and his task involved tagging rhinos to help catch poachers. At any rate, his two "guides" for this trip were two South African men whose job included dealing with "problem" lions. When a village is being terrorized by a lion, they are called in to hunt the lion. The problem I have with hunting a lion is the method that they used. When hunting a lion in the high grass, it's easy for them to find the trail and to track where the lion has gone. The method of hunting is as follows: Man # 1 (a.k.a. "The bait") walks as quietly as possible on the trail left by the lion. His job is to get attacked by the lion. Man # 2 (a.k.a. "The man who better have @*&#$% good aim!") waits until the lion attacks, and shoots it. The trick is knowing how a lion attacks. When the lion realizes it's being following, it lies quietly in wait until the "bait" is very close. Then Mr. Lion leaps into the air and comes down on the bait. The problem is that they don't ROAR like you'd imagine. The only warning you have is the sound of the air leaving their lungs when they pounce. One the lion pounces, the man with the gun that shoots large bullets that are roughly the size of a hot & spicy smoked sausage, shoots it. Then, depending on the location of the lion when he shot the sausage through it's head, he pulls the carcass off his buddy.

The reason that story was even told to the guy from church, was that the "bait" man had some pretty vicious scars from that one time when the first shot went through the lion's lungs and not through it's head. That lion didn't quite die instantly. Turns out shooting a lion through the lungs makes it angry.

So...in conclusion....I think being the "bait" while hunting problem lions would probably be a pretty good adrenaline rush. I only hope they are paid well! Seems like they'd better take turns being bait.

I'm having a hard time telling if you are serious or not....You aren't truly trying to make anyone believe that that bear actually looked up, did a little dance, and round house kicked you are you? I'm not trying to say that you are lying, or full of sh*t, but it I think we all know better that a bear couldn't possibly round house kick you.

Now, my Brother in Law has a way with stories, they are grand stories where he is being followed by government helicopters and out running the police in incredible ways. He's been involved in car accidents where every person in the car would have in any other circumstance been decapitated, somehow he walks away unscathed. He is offered employment from drug lords paying $10,000 per week harvesting marijuana. My point is that his stories are incredibly far fetched, so I don't buy it.

Yours seems a bit far fetched too, not that I'm saying it isn't true, but when you showed that video, that made it really really tough to bite off.

Tim, the bear is sleeping and it doesn't have a knife. And that kicking below the belt too! I'm starting to think you take unfair advantages.

The first one died, I got cheap and used old war surplus ammo it ate the barrel. I got one for x-mas 2 years ago that is a collector grade rifle. The rifle was made for the war but never was issued, stored in mint condition for the past 70+ years. My father in law got my daughter one of a lesser grade that I might break in. It's amazing that the Mauser has very little recoil with a steel plate for a recoil pad. My 30/06 Savage kicks likes a mule compared to it.

Side note, my first one cost $40 in the 1980's.

I could probably make a new barrel for the Mauser, but I am backlogged for about a year and a half with museum work. I have a WWI Mauser broomhandle 9mm pistol, I love that thing.
