Other Hobbies

What are some of your other hobbies?
Mine is buying selling antiques, vintage toys and other interesting things. I love it. I hit all the yard sales, always have wanted adds out. Ive even been know to do some dumpster diving. I cant help myself! After i get a bunch of stuff together I drive a few hours south and sell things in flea markets. i dont know what it is about all this stuff i enjoy but whatever it is, i do love it. I love the idea of getting something for 20 bucks. then a few weeks later selling it for 100! Now I have never gotton rich from doing all this, but me and my wife have gotton a few free vacations from it. LOL Most of the time i just spend all my profit on more junk to sell later!

I have a sawmill, and literally take it from the tree to the woodshop. I am building two grandfather clocks for my daughters right now....maybe they will be done next Christmas. I cut the walnut 4 years ago.

Re: Other Hobbies

English sportscars. They break down constantly and are super easy to work on, and cheap to buy, and fun to drive. Like a vacation every time I get behind the wheel. Love of my life.

Small sailboats, something a bit quirky and old. Nothing too fast, just relaxing. Fix 'em, sail 'em, flip 'em, run 'em aground. Hang out with the dolphins and birds.

Music, tons of music all the time. Sorting, classifying, rating, making playlists, sharing with friends, building strange portable, rechargeable, indestructible, miniature stereo systems. Any genre: African, Jazz, Japanese punk, old Delta Blues, Hip Hop, Folk, anything. Mostly fringe stuff. That's what gets me through the winter, always a huge music project going on.

Right now it's sorting jazz. Ornette Coleman totally destroyed jazz, shattered it into a million shiny pieces. After him, there was nothing left to say. He took what Charlie Parker started and ran the train right out of track. Like Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. The Jackson Pollocks of music. Awesome.

"Now, some guys, they just give up livin'
They start dyin', little by little, piece by piece.
Some guys come home from work and wash up,
And go racin' in the street."

Bruce Springsteen

I'm part owner of a sawmill too. We've got a Hudson 36". I love cutting up fresh timber. Gives the project a little more personal satisfaction when you look at the finish product and think about when you stood looking at the tree.

A buddy of mine has a gold claim on the Pend O'reille river just below the border. We'll be spending some time this summer chasing the glitters in the river.

Re: Other Hobbies

I jetski raced for 10 years. It was taking time away from my daughter that was 3 when I parked them. 7 Regional Championships, and 8 National tour races, in 3 classes later.

I took up archery and not me and my daughter enjoy target tournaments and bowhunting together.
I'm also the softball coach, for her youth league team, which is taking most of my time now.

Re: Other Hobbies

Drag racing, bout all I have time for since we typically run somewhere every weekend somewhere. Love the family atmosphere and commradery out there, cant ever rely on getting help from your "normal buddies" for anything, but by gawd, you call one of your racing buds and ask for a lil help, usually ends up with 3-4 guys showing up.....bout the only genuine people i've ever met in my entire life that are'nt out to use you for their personal gain.

Tim- awesome job on the model trucks!!! One of my racing sites we have a fella that builds exact replica's of guys cars, scarey detail, and I think he makes out pretty darn good selling them: pre order situation, usually takes him a month or so to turn it, but something to think about offering if you enjoy it, hook up and sell to some trucking companies and what not

Re: Other Hobbies

Thanks for the compliment IHI.
All but the boom truck were replicas for other people. I get about a thousand bucks for them and i do them in the winter when things slow down a little.

Re: Other Hobbies

The model trains-------------thats what I used to do-I gave it up - turned into an addiction. Great Hobby I used to use the fiber optic line for the lights on the buildings and street lights. Had the turntable, I also had a video camera built in to one- that was really cool ! Everything about it was really creative- that was the fun part, watching the trains go around,,,ahhhh, I collected a lot of Rivarrossi trains from Italy, some from Germany- I was an HO guy- never got into the bigger o scale or G -
enjoy maybe I will get back into it some day- you never know
