Oooops...

Mowed the wrong lawn today.

I have a lawn client here who has a couple rental properties and just picked up a new one last week and wants me take it on too. I told him no problem, got the address and would take care of it Tuesday. I did it first thing this morning.

He called me just after lunch, told me he was at the property, asked when I would be there because there was a few trees and other things he wanted to go over with with me.

I told him I mowed it this morning, but could come by and look at what he wants. He told me the lawn looks as if it hasn't been mowed for two weeks or so?

?? ?? ??

I thought maybe I had the house number wrong, so I confirmed. House number was correct. Street name was correct.

But apparently, one of us wasn't clear on Street vs. Lane. And it wasn't me. He realized it was his error, and told me to just go ahead and bill him for the lawn (not his) that I mowed.

Can you imagine the thoughts going through the head of the guy/gal whose yard you did cut? Too funny. Maybe a future paying customer or reference.

really, if you're getting paid to do it, go by later and tell them that it was a free promotion. Maybe they'll hire you.

Re: Oooops...

I thought about going back. If they have a lawn service, they'll probably never know it was done by someone else. If their lawn service shows up in the next day or two, THEY will probably wonder WTF?!

If they don't have a lawn service, then yeah, that would be interesting to see when they got home.

You'd be a wussy if you didn't go to the people's house you did mow and try to sell them a mowing contract. Ask them how they liked the promotional freebie.

Re: Oooops...

Your know there is a Leave it to Beaver episode where Eddie Haskel tells the Beav, to just mow some ones lawn and ask for 50 cents when your done and the person will be glad to pay you. He ends up getting yelled at for ruining someones prize winning grass.

Re: Oooops...

Went back. Explained what happened. They got a good laugh. They even gave me a loaf of mango bread and a jar of pickled mangos-gotta love local style!! I couldn't use the "free promo" line, but I did offer to do the rest of the month free if they signed on to a monthly contract.

They politely declined, citing budget, but he wants me to come back when the mangos are done dropping to prune the trees. I made sure to let him know I'd be billing him for that.

I may even give my client (who gave me the wrong addy) my standard $25 credit for a referral. After all, I likely wouldn't have got the tree job if not for that.

Haha, I'm glad it turned out well. I was wondering for a while if the other guy thought he might have got a visit from the lawnmover fairy
