One of my favorite days of the year
I have depression. This particular day is as important to me as Christmas. Others who live with this everyday may already know before I say why.
From this day forward the days get longer! Yessss!
I haven't felt too bad this year with my new job. I'm actually happy for Christmas for the first time in years.
Merry Christmas.

I get S.A.D. as well - short days and lots of rain definitely bring on the gloom. That, and no bikinis for 6 months (ummm, I meant on hot chicks, not my hairy a$$!)
Hang tough framerman, the betta days, they be comin' -

Not to rain on your depression or pull you down further, but the Solstice isn't until tomorrow the 22nd.
If we were still doing the Old Religions, your depression would be lifted by the celebration of the seasons. I mean, the old chieftains saw the depression settling on the village, so celebrated the shortest day of the year as the turning point...like you said.
Celebrate life for life's sake, not for some religious fantasy.
Peace to all the brothers and sisters...Winter Solstice is coming!

I moved from the 40th parallel to the 30th. That worked wonders.

I,m starting to realize why a good portion of New Englanders are miserable jerks. S.A.D. is probably the reason.
Hey Mac, I'm glad you clarified your statement. I did not want to start thinking of you as a "Speedo Bandito".

I didn't even realize that the date varied. I always remembered it being on the 21st...not always so, grasshopper.

Hey Framerman,
There's a guy here in Norfolk (which is just a stone's throw from the 14-0 NE Pats) who celebrates the winter solstice and is greatly depressed on the summer's solstice. He's a morning jogger.
When I was still flying RC, I would count the minutes the afternoon light would increase, around the WW's birthday (Jan 20) there was enough light to sneak in a flight after work.
Now, here's a bit of astrological info of which not too many people are aware. Well, we all know that the days get shorter until the winter solstice, but did you know that the sun actually has been setting later and later in the afternoon since about Dec 16 ? The sun is rising later and later in the AM, but the afternoons are getting longer. (Yes, the latitude on which you live will alter this statement).
Gee, and I thought it was the Christmas eggnog that was helping with my SAD

Yeah, like its 7:15 right now and pitch dark. The sun won't be fully up for a few hours yet. Official sunrise is at 8:00 am, but we never pay much attention to that. By 4:00 pm, the sun will be set, done and gone.
I love it.

Help me out here. I just want to get this straight. Nostalgia for the "Old Religions" that they can lift a depression and then, in the next sentence, an admonishment for celebrations of "religious fantasy."
Did I get that right? Are you saying all religions are fantasy or only the ones you don't like?

Religious fantasy as in a virgin giving birth.
Look up the true origins of Christmas and you will see it is an English thing that the Jew church twisted to get acceptance. It had nothing to do with a virgin giving birth.
Living life for life's sake is way easier than living life for the Jews' sake.

When Christmas was originally instituted, December 25th was indeed a pagan festival commemorating the birthday of a false god. While this is a historical fact, what is frequently overlooked is that the church’s choice of December 25th was intentional. Instead of Christianizing a pagan festival, the church established a rival celebration.
While the world has all but forgotten the Greco-Roman gods of antiquity, they are annually reminded that two thousand years ago Christ, the hope of humanity, invaded time and space.
A true Gift.
