Yeah, I been hearing it on the radio all day today, from what I heard he didn't break a leg or arm just mashed his face. The big chin is going to be pissed! Hope he is going to be able to start this season.

This really shocked me when I heard it, I was under the impression that it was common practice for big time athletes like this to have obligations in their contracts from the league that wouldn't allow them to do high risk activities such as riding motorcycles.

I have to agree, as an avid motorcycle rider.

He should have been wearing a helmet and is stupid for not.

747 - King of the thread stealers!

Now, back on topic. It's unfortunate that it happened to him or anyone. However, I have absolutely no sympathy for ANYONE who gets hurt on a motorcycle when they are stupid enough to ride without a helmet.

The same goes for those that ride in shorts - ever seen anyone who's gone down on their bike when wearing shorts? They look like their legs have been throug a meat grinder!

Back to Ben, he wouldn't step on the football field without a helmet so why ride a bike without one? Just plain stupid!

He is an idiot, to say the least, and I say that as a motorcyclist. This guy had the world by the balls, the youngest QB with a ring and you know he was getting more ass than a toilet seat. Riding the worlds fastest stock bike, a Suzuki Hayabusa, with no helmet... dumb ass!

Re: Oh No!!!!

Didn't K. Winslow get sued by the NFL/Team for playing in a parking lot on one and hurting himself? Contract stipulated that he not be on a bike in so many words.
Anyway, I don't see his logic of being safe about a head shot from a linebacker, as compared to a compact car.
Helmet's save lives, D&D's are for posers.

Re: Oh No!!!!

I find your arguement totally bogus.
I ride my bike at least 5 days out of 7, as if this makes you or I some type of expert? No.
I ride rain or shine, I've been riding since I was 6, and I know enough to wear a helmet EVERY time.
I'm all for freedom of choice, and it's my freedom to call B.R. and anyone else who rides without a helmet an idiot.
Any rider knows that there are two types of riders, the ones who have been down, and the ones who are going down. In other words: If you ride, you slide.
I've been down several times over the years, some with gear some without, but ALWAYS with a helmet. I have been in two accidents with cages that would have cost me my life had I not been wearing one. Care to see pics of my helmets after the crash?
Your jobsite example arguement is also totally absurd. So they should do away with hardhats, laynards, safety glasses and OSHA because, hey, we do construction and we know the risks, so it's ok to get killed doing it? BS!
And then to say we should all be worrying about more important things? This is a discussion forum, we're not worrying about it.

Re: Oh No!!!!

LOL, I love this debate helmet vs no helmet - it's all over the talk radio now.

Interesting things I have heard so far -

PA motorcycle fatalities have risen by 30% since the repeal of their helmet law (same thing happened out here long ago when they repealed it)

You don't have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle with no protection, but you have to wear a seat belt in a 6000 lb suburban that can get hit by a tank and not be phased.

The PA state government realized that there were too many stupid people in PA so they set about to repeal the helmet law as an automatic gene pool cleanser.

Doctors and nurse in PA the organ transplant field of medicine love motorcycle riders because they all come in dead with smashed heads and perfectly good organs.

I'm betting there is one guy in PA right now that wishes he had a helmet on!

As the owner of the World's Nicest Motorcycle ( h**p://mickeyco.com/wnmc/ ) I feel uniquely qualified to respond to this discussion. I don't wear a helmet unless it's really cold, I'm on a dirt bike jumping, or in a state that forces me to do so. I don't think there should be helmet laws or seatbelt laws for adults. I do think that it's OK to have laws regarding minors. If I have insurance why should anyone care if I wear a helmet or not. The cause of most accidents are inexperienced riders, alcohol and the biggest is idiots in cars. I have never had an accident on the street (knock on wood) but I have had them off-road and have walked away every time (no car). Thousands of people both very young and old, die each year from head injuries, from falling down, we should probably make all young and old people wear helmets all the time. Over the last few years quite a few cheerleaders have gotten head injuries while performing, we should probably require all cheerleaders to wear helmets. Many, many people die from cigarettes every year, we should ban smoking or at the very least make them wear helmets. Maybe everybody in America should wear helmets all the time, this could save many lives. We should probably ban skiing, horse riding, sky diving etc. It seems every time some famous idiot is involved in a motorcycle incident without a helmet another bunch of idiots that don't ride (and probably don't like) motorcycles come along and start proposing helmet laws. If you want to wear a helmet that's just super, but don't tell me what to do.

You can twist statistics around all day "PA motorcycle fatalities have risen by 30%", it doesn't mention that motorcycle sales and registration are up more than that since the repeal of their helmet law, ie. More riders more accidents.

Below are some more stats:

According to National Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA) statistics published in Traffic Safety Facts 2001, motorcyclists involved in crashes are injured or killed in about 80 percent of those crashes regardless of the level of protective riding gear used by the operator or passenger. The most effective way to reduce motorcycle injuries and deaths is to prevent crashes from occurring through a comprehensive program of rider education and training, improved licensing procedures, alcohol education, and improved motorists awareness of motorcycles.

Indiana
Starting in 1999, motorcycle sales and registrations in Indiana increased rapidly from 103,000 in 1999 to 145,000 in 2003. Even though the state training program increased training from 3,203 in 1998 to over 6,000 in 2003, the huge number of new and returning riders seeking training created a backlog for training. Providing quality rider training and education programs for all new and returning riders has emerged as major problem since 2000.

North Carolina
NHTSA statistical analysis on the percentage of fatalities per registration (no increase in percentage of fatalities in helmet-choice states); (2) Motorcycle Sales Increase (30%) in helmet-choice states ($39 million increase in state sales taxes), and; (3) Projected motorcycle registration increases (20%) (potential tax increase of $26 million). This bill was reviewed and sent back to the House Finance committee last session. We want to see this bill on the calendar during the short session.

Reports from ABATE officials in the State of Florida indicate that they have recently completed their study on Motorcycle fatalities since the passage of their helmet amendment (free-state). Unofficial reports indicate that helmet-freedom does not cause higher fatalities among motorcyclists. We are anxiously awaiting a copy of the full report.

So just answer this one question - We all know that the majority of motorcycle accidents are not caused by the motorcycle driver. So if tomorrow you and your 12 year old were driving along on your motorcycle minding your own business and as you went through a green light a drunk driver ran the red and clips your back wheel and spins you both off the bike....

... if at that moment if you could stop time, would you choose to have a helmet on or not have a helmet on the both of you?

By the way - REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY curious why you would wear a helmet on a dirt bike and not a street bike when the statistics show that the odds of being injured on the street compared to off road are about 1000:1 higher?

The only time I had a 12 year old on my motorcycle was when I was 12 or 13 and didn't know any better. I would never ride with a child on a motorcycle on the street. If I did have a child on a motorcycle, the child would have a helmet. I know what the risks are and chose not to wear a helmet. Now if I could stop time, there was this cute blonde..........

With regards to wearing a helmet on a dirtbike versus on the street, I have had some bad accidents on a dirtbike; gravel rash, hole in cheek, detached ear, broken nose several times, etc. These all happened without a helmet when I was younger, I have since learned. When I ride a dirtbike I am jumping things, riding fast and crazy, the type of things that lead to accidents, I don't do this on the street anymore. After 35 years or riding motorcycles (some years, a motorcycle serving as my only transportation) it's been my personal experience that I get hurt on the dirt and not on the street, so I wear a helmet when I'm on the dirtbike.

Where are you getting "statistics show that the odds of being injured on the street compared to off road are about 1000:1 higher"?

"would you suggest wearing a helmet while beating your head against a wall?"

After much discussion with my associates, I think that this activity would be best left unregulated, it would be best if the government kept its nose out of peoples business.
