Newbies

Does anybody else get the feeling that we are becoming a DIY source of info? In other words, slicing our own throats?
I'll freely admit that I'm just as guilty as everyone else, the biggest part of my job is providing people with exactly what they want. Perhaps I carry it too far here.
My thoughts are that we don't spend enough time at the DIY site and that they are bleeding over here for info. I suggest that we all spend a little more time there.
Nathan, a more prominant link from here to there would be helpful.

I've had that feeling since late December. Probably too much 'expert witness' type input being offered up as well. Helping folks who are doing a little "due diligence" work before entering into a contracting experience is one thing; helping those who are up to their ears in a contracting dispute is entirely another. Expert witness testimony is probably better money than actually doing the work itself.

Re: Newbies

Funny that you should mention 'expert witness', #1 was headed in that direction in the medical field before she died.
I was thinking more of when I bipped on here and there were a bunch of flooring questions about everything over concrete. Homeowners the info is there! Go back in the topics!

Good point Pipe. Maybe Nat should start charging them then paying us a commision.

I'll be in charge of comic relief.

Re: Newbies

Well, maybe we should just shut down all diy posts and direct them to www.diychatroom.com. Then anyone who wants to answer that type of question can just go over there and help out.

Thougths?

Re: Newbies

I encourage everyone to go "subscribe" to your forums. I just went and subscribed to the roofing forum so every time new post is started I will know about it.

Also perhaps we should refer all "home owners" asking for help to the diy chat room. I don't mind giving advise to other contractors, but when it comes to home owners my attitude changes slightly.

Amen - nothing like a DIY'er who seems more interested in hearing themselves talk, than they are in gathering professional input, to send me over the edge. I just lose it when I read "Thanks for all the great input you guys but I thought that I could blah blah blah...". Yeah, OK - you thought based on what? Your vast wealth of professional experience or your 50 hours of watching Pat and Jody putz around the house on cable? Friggin' morons! (See, I'm wound up already )
I think all the ideas expressed here are great. I didn't know what "subscribing" to a forum was but now I'm going to check it out at DIY. I'm hoping this site will continue in the tradition of being primarily about contractors 'talking' with contractors. That's what I like about it.

I would hang out at DIY more if Nat would upgrade me from 'fresh meat' to member.

Re: Newbies

Speaking of something for nothing. I go out yesterday to give a qoute. Off the bat she starts asking about paint types, whats the best way to remove this wall paper, what kind of primers would you use...etc... After 10 minutes of this I told her my job as a contractor is to give her a price for a professinal job done in a timely manner. I told her the info she wanted was propriatory (sic) info and I was not at liberty to discuss it. I further informed her that Home Depot often scheadules classes for those type questions and in the future it may be better to arrange a class versus wasteing my valuable time..sheesh

Re: Newbies

I can't count the number of times I've been hired to fix a DIYer mistake.
It's usually the wife calling me because the husband though he knew what he was doing. And had no idea.
Most of the time when I get called to fix their screw up it more expensive than if I they had hired a professional to begin with.
