The New Halloween Movie - WOW!

I just got back from seeing Rob Zombie's Halloween. I have to mention, it took me a full ten minutes before Chris or myself were able to utter a word (it was that intense). The movie is unbelievably thrilling, scary, distubing and genius. I don't mean genius in an IFC, wanna-be artsy way. Its an incredible flick. Rob Zombie just hit the map as the next Hitchcock with a movie and genre that is in its own league.

I have seen every Zombie film and while they aren't for everyone, you can tell the guy has talent. John Carpenter's Halloween is an untouchable classic in the unstoppable villain genre so when I heard there was going to be a remake I was very skeptical to say the least. When I heard Rob Zombie was going to make it, I had some renewed faith as I think his perspective is fresh. Fresh is an understatement. His tone, pace, and crescendos are wicked. Look for Zombie to become the premier horror movie director of this decade.

The latest round of movie remakes are merely new faces, same screenplay and higher budget special effects. Fot the most part they are lousy. This version of Halloween takes a slightly different perspective (more towards killer than victim). It grabs you by the cajones and does not let go. Zombie avoids the traps of cliches and redundant scenes but still keeps the whole movie loyal to original. You will know what you are watching, but you will not thing "remake".

The way the plot is developed, the unspoken way Zombie allows you to see the psychopathy behind Michael Myers is beyond description. Movies don't excite me all that much. Some are more watchable than others. This one took my breath away. I want to go back to the theater and see it again (which I have never done in my life) Go see it. Do NOT bring the kids.

Oh way cool. I too am a Rob Zombie fan, love the music and the movies are good.. although Rejects was much better than Corpses.

I'm also a John Carpenter fan. This will be an interesting film.

Does he have any of his music in the movie too. I have all of White Zombie and Rob Zombies CD's.

Sounds like my kind of movie.

To heck with chick flicks!

His music is pretty good. You can hear all the old horror movie sound clips in it and I'm guessing they have been a big influence on his own movie making.

Sinister Urge has a lot of it.

Still one of the scariest movies I have ever seen was the original The Haunting, 1963.

Was that the one with the "Rubber" doors bellowing inward from the ghostly prescence?

That's the one.. I watched it once, late one night a number of years ago. I haven't been able to forget it.

Re: The New Halloween Movie - WOW!

We actually went and saw it again toight. I have never done that with any movie.. ever. I wanted to make sure what I saw was not just the emotion and hard edge of the distrubing swaying my opinion. I again left the theatre breathless. You guys are right about one thing. What disturbed audiences 20 years ago is child's play and the "shock me out my seat" ante is upped.

If you go see this movie you have to leave the original out of your head. Micahel Myers was more of a hollow boogie man character of bad dreams in the original. The charm of Carpenter's classic was in the suspense. This movie is more literal and places you firmly into the mind of what Michael Myers is.. a psychopath. A psychopath feels but one emotion..rage. Zombie develops Micahels character and shows you what created this monster on earth. What makes it so scary (to me) is that Michael becomes humanized and real not just a fantasy of childhood bad dreams. The movie has a high level of brutality but what would one expect from a serial killing machine that is lost to psychopathy and rage? I reiterate this is not a movie for anyone under 18. Three fairly steamy sex scenes, raunchy Zombiesque humor and cover your eyes violence (unless you are already desensitized)

Within about ten minutes of watching you will be taken to level of disturbing that you probably have never experienced. If you ever do, it means your nightmares have come true. I heard a bunch of people muttering "Oh God" during certain scenes where the relentless nature of this very big, very strong pitiless beast just won't stop coming. This has to be experienced in a theatre where the crash of a behemoth shattering a wood door to pieces can be felt.

Again, don't expect a verbatim remake. That would have been weak. This is a stand alone movie that has suspense at albeit a lower level than the original but is everything a horror movie should be. Did I say HORROR movie? Zombie is a genius. Loved the film work, camera angles and edits. The acting by some of the characters leaves some to be desired but does not detract from the movie.

Re: The New Halloween Movie - WOW!

Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE horror and Zombie fan. I bought my tickets well in advance for the first showing of the premier of Holloween. I thought the movie was good, but wouldn't go further than that. It was well done, although maybe slightly too long, and I can't remember one part that was frightening.

I enjoyed this version as well. I saw it Saturday. The kid Mike Meyers resembled a close friend of mine growing up--that alone creeped me out. The sister was hot as hell.

Re: The New Halloween Movie - WOW!

recruit, I think the second half of the movie was a little hurried. I think frightened and disturbed are two different modes when viewing a horrow movie. I would say some of the scenes are more disturbing than anything. To be frightened one definitely needs a little suspense.
