My First Deer!

Well, I drilled an 8 pointer last night. It was right near hunting close. He came in running chasing a doe trail. He was grunting and I grunted a couple times to stop him. He spotted me and turned and trotted off, but I grunted and got him back. He was about 40 yds out and quartered away when I got him to stop. I let the arrow fly and it went into the back of the lung, through part of the heart, and out the front shoulder. He ran 150 yds and went down in a field.

Shooting a Hoyt Trykon at 70lbs and Muzzy X-3 broadheads.

I havent hunted in 18 years and this is my first kill with either bow or gun.

40 yards is right out there at the edge of my comfort zone. Good job!

Did you get him dressed out soon enough that you were still pumped for the drag?

Re: My First Deer!

Congrats on a nice kill. A man ought to be proud of that for a first kill with a bow. Some may give you crap depending on location but around here thats a good Buck. The local store here has around 120 guys in the Buck contest, there have only been two kills so far if that says how the hunting is this year. On a side note a fella about 30 miles from here took a bear with a bow that weighed in around 580lbs. I havent seen any photo's yet but the story was confirmed to me by the County Under Sheriff who is also a friend. The fella took the shot only about 30yrds from the bear, he's got bigger balls than me is all i can say.

Never heard of the drinking part, but in north-central PA, the hunk o' heart thing is alive and well. So to speak.

Re: My First Deer!

Due to fears of limes and CWD, I didnt partake in any of the pre cro magnon man ceremonies lol!! It was a memorable evening though, that is for sure. Its a shot I will never forget. I spent ALOT of time pre hunt practicing with the new bow since I've been out of hunting so long. I made sure I could constantly hit and respectably group paper plates up to 50 yds.

Re: My First Deer!

Hadnt seen squat all season so i decided to blow last sat off and take my 10 yr old out for some small game action. We got out pretty late, like 9:15 cause mom had to deck him out in like siberia hunting gear even though it was like 45 out. He's stomping through the woods like all kids do, we come to a T intersection in the road about 75 yds from my tree stand and kick out a nice 6 point. Damn thing stopped i hushed my son told him not to move, deer turned and looked at us. Started walking towards us, got to about 25 yds away, stopped again. Turned broadside, completely open wasnt even a spider web between us, took 4 steps up a bank, stopped again and looked at us.

I'm pretty sure i coulda ran up and stabbed him with a damn arrow but of course there i stand in blaze orange with a .22.

Oh, if I could only count the number of times I've come back from camp to see a rack in my headlights as I'm getting close to the house!

Did my archery this year around home and saw a few racks, but none within range. Rifle season, I HAVE to go to camp. It ain't all about the deer, y'know?

Oh def just getting my son out there for his first time hunting and seeing a deer that close. Its funny he kept whispering shoot it dad, SHOOT IT!!! I'm like bud cant shoot it with a gun for 3 more weeks. Bailed on archery this week, he wanted to go out again, the last 2 saturdays have been beautiful. Spending quality time enjoying nature with my son is way more important than bagging a deer.

Hallelujah! Enjoy it while you can. My boys are almost-20 and 21 now, and have more important things to do. They both tried hunting and did pretty well at it, but they've moved on for now. It's a fine tradition; I hope they get back to it, with or without me.

Re: My First Deer!

Congrats on getting the first deer. Getting it with the bow is even better. A 40 yard shot would be at my max with a bow.

My boy and I finished rifle hunting this past weekend, he started hunting last year and got a nubbin buck for his 1st deer, judging from his reaction he had just nailed a trophy. We didn't get any this year, the deer vanished after opening morning, not to be seen again for the season.

My boy is fired up to get a bow, hopefully we can get him set up with one this winter so he can go next fall.
