Question

Moderators ... Off Topic Proposal!

Hi all!

As some of you know, I am a writer on a fact-finding mission! My main character is a contractor who is a co-owner of a moderately-sized family business. I've chose this profession for him because it exemplifies the type of person who is equally savvy and hardworking, and of particular interest to me as a writer. My favorite TV shows (though you may laugh) are found on TLC, HGTV and the Discovery Channel. Personally, I've finished a basement and build deck with the expertise of a good friend, and have attempted many smaller projects on my own. I'm certainly eager to learn, unafraid of the unknown, and able to rely on instinct when in doubt.

That said ... Painter77 has posed an interesting prospect that's only connection to this site is the fact that most, if not all of you are male:

"For authenticity's sake, if the readers, perhaps contractors in this case, are wished to read your novel and be fascinated by the genuineness of both outside and inside of your character, and to wonder: Wow, how did she know that?, then your character's glimpses into the contractors' mentality would not be unnecessary. His personal and love life, which probably is one of the plot's main themes and completely is at your disposal, of course, is irrelevent here. However, regarding his love life, we men here wouldn't mind to give out honest opinions from our experience and viewpoint.."

So, what do you think? Should I encourage a male perspective in addition to a professional one?

One Other Thing If Ty Was On One Of Our Sites Screaming Over A Bullhorn His Happiness Factor Would Truly Be Less Than On Tv When He Does It...

Yeah Ty would catch an asskicking on one of my sites. Childishness has no place in an atmoshpehere that is already unsafe form the get-go... and the blowhorn is just RUDE, which is why I'd kick him.

Actually, you are more than right Grumpy! I re-read it myself and I don't think I am prepared for the possible reprocussions! I like to stir things up is all, and the idea of obtaining a broad range of male opinions (for secondary characters) seemed like a good idea at the time.

Perhaps I can just throw out topics every now and then (life stuff, not necessarily contstruction related) and get your opinions. That is if it is all right with everyone, especially the moderators????

Just like what transpired when 25Brian relayed his wife's viewing contruction with rose-colored glasses after watching cable shows. That got a few interesting replies. (And, by the way, I can't stand Ty or his bullhorn!).

I wouldn't be upset if there wasa secondary character in your book, nicknamed Grumpy that is always willing to share his opinion and kept people on their toes, the way this Grumpy does.

Trust me I am a complex and colorful character. I'd write an autobiography about my teen and early twenty years but I forgot most of the good stuff.

Grumpy tooting his own horn, Painter77 covering his own a$$, sounds like the beginning of pretty screwed up orgy to me.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but it did bring something to mind
Maybe this will help

I have heard, personally and from friends and associates, over and over again, that women (usually it's that special woman) want to know what we (men) are really thinking

I firmly believe that if these women got their wish and knew what we were really thinking, they would never stop hitting us
