Mispronunciations Etc.

This is intended to be a light thread. Many of us have been on estimates or jobs where the homeowner tries to "speak our language".

It's just funny sometimes how they tend to mispronunce or sometimes mis-spell certain things.

It's not their job to know these things, it's ours and I never say a word. No disrespect at all to them, but I wonder what other common things you guys hear or see written. I run into these and many others all the time.

Effervence/Efflorescence
2-way switch/3 or 4 way
Mortise & Tendon/LMAO
Grating/Grading
GIFC and other variations/GFCI
Lean/Lien
Ashfault/Asphalt
Whys/Wyes
Levitron/Leviton
Realator/Realtor
Swifter/Swiffer

Again, just for a little fodder, I'm sure you have all heard some fun ones too.

Re: Mispronunciations Etc.

Last week a home owner asked the electrician to put in a keyless pullchain light. I was trying to work on a ladder without laughing too hard. 2-way switch I've heard many times as-well.

I once had a typo on a punch list for a Fire Hall I built. "Clean CUM above countertop" He meant to say CMU.

Re: Mispronunciations Etc.

A guy asked me to retro in 3 speakers for a home theater in an outside wall.

Me: "are you sure you want in-wall speakers? That means cutting into the vapour barrier, removing insulation replacing with ridgig foam replacing cut vapor barrier and using a mile of tape to seal it again; it could compromise the seal on the vapor barrier."

HO: "Thats fine it won't hurt the exterior vapor barrier"

ME: "The what? You mean the house wrap?"

HO: "yeah that TyVek stuff"

ME: "sigh....its not exactly a vapor barrier.....at all...."

Re: Mispronunciations Etc.

Kent-go ahead! Did any of you notice that I actually mis-spelled mispronunciation on the title of the thread and in the body of the OP? I think I changed it now. It sucks to be human.

I guess that the "english major" forum would have had fun with that one!!!

I don't think a real sparky has ever been inside the house . I do get a kick out of the breaker box being right above the toilet.

Re: Mispronunciations Etc.

Actually, (just to play Miss Fussbudget) I've encountered much more misuse of the language from guys in the trades than from HO's.

E.g., joistez = joists, mattox = mattock, and so forth.

All the framers know about floor joices.

A guy that used to work for me left for a job paying pavilion wages.

I'm not a big fan of Tyvex housewrap.

One of the kids in the neighborhood called me igornant.

I put my clothes in the warsher.
