Just For Fun, Memories.

What is your best Thanksgiving memory? If you like to share, jump in.

Mine was spending the morning with my Grandpa, cutting firewood, plinking with a .22, getting to drive his pickup....I was maybe 9. The meal later never equaled the time spent with him.....and that morning was ours.

Re: Just For Fun, Memories.

About 7 years ago i spent thanksgiving climbing MT KILAMANJARO, i think it was the day before the summit, my girlfriend at the time packed a Happy Thanksgiving card in my pack. I sat in my tent, in a wind storm, eating some bad chicken, reading her card, the next morning i was standing at 19,000 ft. GMOD.

Back 30 years or so when my father was alive, it was a thanksgiving day tradition to tramp the fields ALL day in search of pheasants, rabbits, quail, get home and be to damn tired to eat, but I still miss that today.

Re: Just For Fun, Memories.

Mine was back in the early 70's in S.E. Asia. All of us were a little "introspective" that we werent home with our families but sucked it up and made the best of it. Funny, the same question went around then and we all had out answers concerning family. Now, many years later, I realize that there was nothing more special than sharing that day with people you know would put their lives on the line for you without hesitation...and a few did. But every Thanksgiving is special when you realize there are things and people that you're grateful for no matter how insignificant it or they may seem. All in all, I think most of us here can say we have it pretty good when we consider what the alternatives could be.

Re: Just For Fun, Memories.

Mine was the first time with the future in laws. It was her Grandparents that were the highlight.

There were 8 of us for the dinner. The table had (2) 30 lb. turkeys. There were 6 apple pies ALONE on the desert table, not to mention the DOZENS of other pies. You could not find a place at the table for a spare dining utensil. The food that was there could easily feed a large wedding reception.

My wife's grandmother, first time sitting at the table, decides she's going to tell me how to act there.

"You WILL eat all on your plate, you WILL have seconds, you will have a try of at least 3 pieces of pie and if you think you are going to go in the other room and fall asleep in front of the football game, think again!"

She was dead, dead serious. Crabby ol' woman.

Now the most incredible man I've met in my life besides my dad is my wife's grandfather. I cannot give justice trying to describe this man in such a short post, but this man was the kindest, friendliest, most awe inspiring man I have ever met. A super story teller with a bottomless gut. He ate everything left over from everyone's plate, still had room for 3rd helpings, and quite a few pieces of pie.

He told a story, an absolute true story of him hunting one day. He downed a buck he thought for sure was dead. As he approached, the deer got up, chased after him, picked him up in his rack, rode him to a barbed wire fence and dropped dead just short of slicing him up in the wire. He was quite a legend in his hometown and they swear the story is 100% true, no bs. It was told in a comedy style and it was one of those gut splitting stories that your cheeks hurt from laughing.

He died about 6 months later in a freak swimming pool accident.

I wish I knew him much longer.

RIP Basil, you are missed.

Re: Just For Fun, Memories.

I've had a lot of memorable Thanksgivings, some more than others. I had a different one to post before I read Framermans, but he reminded me of one about 10 years ago.
One of my good friends parents house had caught on fire late during that summer. Started when the pan on the stove caught on fire and burned most of the kitchen, blackened the rest of the house from about 4 ft up with smoke.

Now these people were like my second parents coming up. Just old country folk that worked in the mill full time and worked in the fields raising corn beans and taters at home. Ms Louise (Weezie to all us) was in a panic.

We all jumped in and started the repairs. Gutting most of the house, re-did the kitchen, Kilzed the smoke damage from the attic to the back bedrooms, remodeled the entire house pretty much. Had them back in by Thanksgiving.

Sometime during all this, Mr. James was diagnosed with cancer. That Thanksgiving was a tough one. He died right before Christmas.

I still go by and see Weezie from time to time. Think I'll stop by and see her this w/e. Thanks for jogging my memory Fram.

Re: Just For Fun, Memories.

Growing up I was never crazy about Thanksgiving.
I was too shy around company and looked at it as a pit stop before Christmas.
However for the last dozen years or so it seems the most recent Thanksgiving was the best yet. Every year as loved ones get older the time spent together during such a great holiday gets even better.
Now. The least favorite Thanksgiving memory: seeing someone fall out of a window while watching the Macy's parade.
I remember feeling sick the whole day/evening before I found out she was ok. She landed on a spectator and broke a couple of his ribs.
