Junky Email or The IRS Owes Me $268.32?
This is a copy paste from an email I received this morning. Somehow they were able to show their address as "service@irs.gov.
After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $268.32. Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 6-9 days in order to process it.
A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

I'd bet it's bogus... Since when does the IRS send emails about refunds?
I'd bet they'll ask for your bank info in order to "expedite" your refund.
Seems the crooks are constantly thinking of new scams to get at your info & money.

From the IRS' site:
You Can Help Shut Down Phishing Schemes
The good news is that you can help shut down these schemes and prevent others from being victimized. If you receive a suspicious e-mail that claims to come from the IRS, you can relay that e-mail to a new IRS mailbox, phishing@irs.gov. Follow instructions in the link below for sending the bogus e-mail to ensure that it retains critical elements found in the original e-mail. The IRS can use the information, URLs and links in the suspicious e-mails you send to trace the hosting Web site and alert authorities to help shut down the fraudulent sites. Unfortunately, due to the expected volume, the IRS will not be able to acknowledge receipt or respond to you.

I just heard about this one the other day on another site. The official IRS answer was that if the letter ends with "Regards, IRS", that's the time that it's among the scam letters. Trying to find that site now....

There ya go Doug, as I said :} If you noticed that email did NOT have the following at min: No division, address, phone numbers, signature of person to contact, etc. Forward the Email AS YOU RECV"D IT, dont make any changes. As Long as they get the original there are ways they can track it thru the internal headers, IP addresses etc contained in its code. This pertains to ALL spam and junk mail Just Forward any of that crap to the appropriate places.

I don't believe anything I get via email anymore. A couple years ago I got the PayPal one and luckily asked someone about it. Called PayPal and had my password changed right away.

If the IRS was able to calculate that you were owed a refund, and able to total the amount, you wouldn't have to apply to get it, they would send it to you.

Yeah sometimes they seem so legitimate that its hard to tell. I stay away from anything that I don't recognize and if it is something I verify with the person before I click any links or send information.

Actually it's quite simple to figure out - IT'S ALL SPAM !!!
Here's a screen shot of the inbox of "spam trap" e-address - the one I use for ordering, giving sites that want an e-address for whatever, etc. Look at all these banks and such. And remember this - I DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUT AT THIS E-ADDRESS WITH ANY OF THESE ENTITIES !!!! I've also gotten that IRS one. And one phish was "from" Yahoo or something, "The e-mail address on your account has been changed to sallywetspot@hotmail.com if this is not correct please click here" That ALMOST got me ALMOST got me thinking. Anyway, here's just two days of phish on my spam trap:
