I'm A Quitter!

Taking this from the top; Tues. morn (3/14) I checked myself into the hospital with chest pain. There I was poked, siphoned, made radioactive, scanned, X-rayed and put through a battery of tests. I made the Great Escape last night.

The first thing that I wanted was a smoke. I fired one up and it didn't taste as good as I remembered, so out the window it went and now I'm determined to make it the last one.

I am not noticing the nicotine addiction nearly as much as habitual patterns; Get morning paper and burn a few while reading. Starting the truck and lighting up are the same thing, just like after eating. Alcohol will definitely be out of the picture for a while.

Any tips from other quitters?

Teetor dude I have been quitting for the last year. I just quit 2 days ago after a pack a week habit. I smokes very fine cigars for about 3 years. What helped me was this. I pictured one of my lungs black as coal and wrote the words do not smoke down the left side of my pointer finger.

Or you can just put your hands to your face and smell the poison you put into your body.

I have been there dude at the hospital same thing as you. We hope you a speedy recovery and if you need help quitting man.

Look at this way also. $3.38x 365 days and year.

Thats something I'm still working on Teetor. The Doc told me a year or so ago it's now a must, still kicken though, just not the habit.

I heard if you can hold out 7 to 10 days it gets a lot easier due to loss of nicotine in the blood stream. I've managed a couple 4 day stretches here lately.

Good Luck

Quiting cigarettes has to be the hardest thing to quit. I have quit some serious things in younger years but haven't been able to do the smokes. Each time I try I smoke more when I go back to it. Dr. told me a few years ago about the emphysema I have. It shared the h*ll out of me but I still smoke.
Teetor, I hope you make it quiting and hope you get strong soon.

Re: I'm A Quitter!

The old breakpoint rules were 3 days, 3 weeks ,3 months, 3 years. I'll be 3 decades soon. 3's seemed about right for me.
For guys wanting to quit but not today I would try: Quit smoking in the house, then quit smoking in the truck, then no smoking around the family, then no smoking in public. It' pretty easy from there.
If you break down and buy a pack you don't have to finish the pack. I used to throw the practically full packs in the crapper at work to be sure I didn't go looking for them. I wasted 20 or 30 packs 30 years ago but really the cigs were the waste.

Re: I'm A Quitter!

I quit very much the same as you, except I didn't have the luxury of 2 days mandatory no smoking.

I quit a job, told my boss "I don't need your shlt!" infact, and as any smoker will tell you under a stressful situation you reach for the cigarettes. I had almost a full pack. I lit one up took a pull or two and threw it out the window along with the pack and my lighter. I haven't smoked since.

Drinking? I was a teenager, I drank every day. I hear everyone saying that about alcohol, but I never made the connection.

Cold Turkey is the only way. There is no such thing as weening yourself off IMO. If you have them around, at a time of weakness you will go right back to it. Think about it, if you don't have cigarettes then you can't smoke. The only thing you have to work at is not buying another pack and not borrowing. If you don't have cigarettes you can't smoke, so you don't have to stop smoking you just have to stop getting cigarettes.

Re: I'm A Quitter!

I've heard doctors now tell patients not to try cold turkey, but rather set a date in 3-4 weeks that will be your last day.( This supposedly gives the mental habit time to be broken) During that time, your supposed to buy the most nasty tasting horrible cigarettes you can find..(decreases the pleasure associated with smoking) If you smoke non-menthol, buy a pack of menthol or vice versa. Also, never take a pack with you when driving but keep them outside when your at home. (This is supposed to make it a concious effort instead of habit chain smoking when you physically have to get up, put on shoes/coat etc. then go outside to have a smoke.)

I decided to try it myself. Don't know if it works completely but so far, by trying the menthol nasty brand, I've gone from a pack a day to a pack lasting over a week.

Re: I'm A Quitter!

I used the "Patch" for a few weeks to kick my 25 year habit.

It was a piece of cake for me... although it might have been tough for my girlfriend !!!

It is well worth the few bucks it costs to use them patches to ease the withdrawls of the Beast.

Good Luck

Re: I'm A Quitter!

Well, one of these days when I start to quit, I'm going to try one thing I saw many years ago. This guy had a baby food jar filled with spent cigs, ashes and water. It was pretty foul. Everytime he felt the urge, he opened the jar and took a whif.
Another thing is to carry a 3/8" dowel, the length of a cigarette around to stick in your mouth, hand, ashtray...whatever.
I've siad it here before...I think you have to change your lifestyle quite a bit; the everyday trifle things that you atomatically do when you light a smoke at the same time.
Read your paper standing up for a few weeks...no way to hold both. Take or place a call with the opposite hand than you usually do. Remove the lighter, ashtray and matches from the truck.
Seems like I have no problem not smoking if I'm not allowed; during a concert, meeting, whatever. BUT, if I know I can smoke and don't have one or can't find a light...it'll drive me nuts. So, maybe keep an unopened pack close by at all times.
Make a list of the times you automatically light one up. Start thinking about what you can do to alter having a cigarette.
Just some thoughts. Good luck.
Excuse me...I have to run out to the truck to get my Marlboro's...

He refuses to admit he chain smokes one after another. If stress provokes smoking... I'd be buying them by the gross.

Re: I'm A Quitter!

What worked for me was having something to live for. I saw a commercial where this guys wife died at 46. I was 30 and just had my second daughter. Quick math tells me she wouldn't be out of high school when I died. Think about every time I want one. Good luck, I know it ain't easy.

Re: I'm A Quitter!

but chewed and dipped.... i think and have heard is worse for you since its easier and fast for the nicotine to get more directly into your blood stream. I dipped about 2 cans a day for about 3 years off and on pretty heavy until i saw my 2 yr old daughter running around the house with a can thinking it was a toy....... that was my turning point .... she laughed as i flushed it down the toilet ( watching the water swirl = funny) havent hand any since.....quit right then and there.

its been about 5 months now and i dont even look back anymore. life is just the same.... havent yet figured out what i ever got out of it??????????

Re: I'm A Quitter!

I've tried it all. Been hypnotized three times, used the patch, gum, some drug, patch and drug at the same time after being hypnotized. I been smoking since I was about 12 that is 42 years ago. Now I smoke a between 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day. I feel good when I make it through 12 packs in the week.
I don't know if I'll ever be able to kick em. But you guys and gals that have my hats off to you! GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Re: I'm A Quitter!

Both the wife and I are using the patch, 2 weeks and counting. We quit last fall for like 2 months and I put on 30 lbs in 3 weeks. Thats when I decided to start smoking again. This time I'm doin better, haven't gained a pound (still workin on gettin rid of the other 30) I think the patch really helps with the physical urge, and for me it's fighting thru the habit side of things. We're determined to make it this time as long as we don't kill eachother.
