Idiots.

So I went to the quarry today to get some gravel. I told the girl in the front (never seen her there before) I need 3/4 ton of three coarse.

She radios the loader, and sends me into the yard. I back up to the pile, and the loader points me to a different pile. WTF?, thinks me...but it's his yard, he should know where everything is.

He loads my truck, I drive back to the scale, and get out to see he loaded me with base coarse. NOT what I wanted.

I go inside, tell the girl I got the wrong rock, I wanted the three coarse. She says "base coarse?". I told her three coarse, pointed to samples box they have labeled "three coarse" and she looks puzzled.

"Oh..um...mumble mumble..." She call someone in the back, and then proceeds to tell me we'll have to unload my truck. I ask her who "we" is and how they will be doing it. "With a shovel" she says. "You can use that one" and she points to a shovel in the corner.

ME?! WTF-it was their mistake. I was told there was no one to unload my truck and I had to do it myself.

OK. FINE!!!

I get it unloaded, go back inside to verify what I want, and she asks "3 tons?" I repeat to her that I only want 3/4 and then go get re-loaded with the right stuff, get on the scale, go inside to pay, and they loaded me with 1.3 tons, when I specifically asked for 3/4 only. Again, the shovel is brought into the conversation.

I told her I was only paying for 3/4 ton, and I was NOT unloading squat. They can accept payment for 3/4, or they can unload it themselves, or I can get in my truck and drive away.

She gets the boss, I explain everything, he still wants me to pay for the whole thing, but offers me a $45 credit memo (cost of a ton) for future purchase, or I can wait till they get someone to unload me-30 minutes to an hour.

I took the credit and I WILL be going back for my free rock.

I hate Businesses that Know and Exercise the fact that they have you BY THE CAJONES in situations like this.

My response is to unload it where I choose, give them a GOOD GFYS and leave, never to return. That is if there does exist an alternate place to get x,y or z.

Re: Idiots.

I have the same ongoing problem at several lumber yards. The biggest mistake they like to make is giving me non-Struc 1 OSB when I specifically ask for Struc 1.
40 sheets of the wrong stuff in the back of my truck and I've already paid. Unload, load again, etc.
Or: Ask for 12 each 2 X 8 X 10's, get 10 each 2 X 10 X 8's, and on and on.
Easy to see why these douche-bags only make $8 an hour.

Only place on the island to get rock. So the credit was extremely generous on their part. Had I been forced to unload my truck, I would have done it right then and there, on the scale. I should have just drove off. I have a couple cops as clients, and am on a friendly basis with the chief himself.

But I'm sure the big rock dudes are far better connected then lil ol' me.

I'm still pretty pissed about the whole deal, but each successive rum and coke is easing that.

Now I get to shovel over a ton of rock tomorrow with a hangover.

Chicken or the egg...

Do they only make 8/hr cause they are douchebags, or are they douchebags because they only make 8/hr?

Really...how hard is it to follow simple instructions?

I usually like to ask those types: "Why do you have to act so stupid? It is an act right? Because nobody could possibly be THAT stupid now, could they?"

I don't know that I've ever driven in to buy gravel and not gotten out of the truck when the guy loads me up. Prevents any miscommunication errors - he gets a thumbs up when he's done and I know what I'm driving off with.

Everyone's got those days though, you just got your "learning experience." They're a bitch, but they do teach ya! Bet you'll double check what's in his bucket next time!

Good luck w/ moving rock w/ a hangover - sometimes the hard labor's all I need (kinda like hair o the dog) and sometimes I just hafta crawl back in bed!

You could not drop the tailgate and dump it just off the scale, so they would have to move the pile before anyone else could use the scale? Or drop hte tail gate and drive in circles until your were unloaded?

Last time Igot out of the truck in the yard they read me the riot act. They have it posted all over the place in there-no getting out of your truck.

Or I could just chalk it up to life in a third world country-which is exactly what this place is like when it comes to doing business.

Ywp. Sweating it out is always a good cure. But an even better one is hiring the neighbor kid who is out of school today.

Inspect everything before it gets loaded, so that you can catch any mistakes. I am sure it was just a lack of judgment at the time on your part, we all do it.

Re: Idiots.

My story,
4th of July weekend I return 60 bags cellulose to a home center, back then I would do tear off, reroof and blown cellulose.
I do the paperwork and they tell me to give it to a yard guy, I go outside and the yard guys slip away like a rat hoarding cheese. Every so often a head peeks out a corner and seeing me they duck back in.
There are cars coming in because this is a HO Honeydoo list holiday.
Pissed off I unload all 60 bags in the middle of the exit lane, scoot on out and go home. No one challenged me, it must have been fire coming out of my eyes and the smoke from my ears.
I'll bet that screwed up the home center for a while.

That is how one says GFYS without uttering a single word!

Yeah. And I must post in their defense-it's the first time in 8 years I ever had a problem. But still-it's not like putting the wrong topping on a pizza...

Re: Idiots.

I once went to the lumber yard to get a few small hardware items. Returned to my job site, looked into my loadbed, and saw six rolls of rosin paper. I have a white Ford F-250. I can imagine some yard rat asking his customer which truck was his, being told that it was the white Ford pick-up with the racks, and putting the rosin paper into the first one he saw.
And no, I did not drive the 6 miles round trip to return the paper.
I owed that yard at least one GFYS.

Too funny! I might have to use that as a training film for FNG's.
Kind of reminds me of a scene from Blazing Saddles.
