I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
Well I've been messing around with songwriting for years now. Suck at guitar basically. Last Saturday I auditioned for a new band as a bass player, next day we played at a crowded biker bar. It's pretty cool! Two of the band members are ex-pro motorcross racers. We are all older and dont give a s**t. Life after 40...

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
Use to play bass myself. Did it for about 4-5 years. Played in a band, wrote some songs. I was OK, if I had continued with my practicing I could have been pretty good. I had many guitar teachers/players say I had great fingers. Eventually just got bored with it.
Still have the Ovation Bass upstairs.

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
I know the feeling that you are feeling right now Tulsa.
No feeling in the world like closing a great jamming set and seeing the crowd get into the music. Good luck with it. But like Leo said it will lose all the glamor eventually and get to be a chore. A band is a hard thing to keep together. Constant practicing, traveling, late nights, the costs of equipment, theres a million things that make it tough. Are you married? The wife was what eventually ended my music career. Still get together and jam some but there was a time... Biker bars are a lot of fun too. Just play anything by David Allan Coe and you'll be the man. |

Hate to disappoint you but I abandon trumpet also. I played in school for about 7 years. Had 1st and 2nd trumpet most of the time and was probably about 3rd best in the local school system.

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
Saxophone here when I was in school. Freshman year I was 3rd seat, first sax. Pretty good for a freshman on a national level high school band. Just bored with it. I remember every key, every note, every song I played.
It was drill, drill, drill. I liked stage band, now that was exciting. We got to play alot of Chicago songs. Still love them.

This one time....at band camp.... ![]() We had better looking females in the sax section. I can't say that much about the trumpet section.

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
I'm in two bands; one is the Merrimack Valley Concert Band, where I play bari sax and the other is my own sax quartet the Sax Pack. Obviously we had something on our mind when we were drinking...I mean thinking... of a name for our group.
![]() The Sax Pack will play four times this Christmas season. I wouldn't give this up as it is such a diversion from work, work, work that it relieves my mind to have some other obligation that is fun. ![]() I play Bass sax and Bari in the quartet all year preparing for our events, that can be summer season or Winter depending on how well we advertise our presence; it is a great change of pace. You can see my Bass sax on my business site as I have a picture there of my 2008 group "The Uncalled Four" that lost too many members to work to survive. Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
Recorded & listened to our last practise session as we went along. Main problem now is our drummer. Say starts out at 120BPM (beats per minute)on a song, winds up at 90-100BPM at the end. Cant fault him too much, first started 6 monthes ago (42 years old). But listening to recorded track of what you just did is a real eye opener. We suck

You may have a good one as most drummers can't help going faster and faster. He may have to work with a metronome or try to push you guys along as group playing is group correction at all times. No single player sets the beat more than the drummer but everyone causes a drummer to struggle if they are dragging their entrances waiting for the beat to happen. |

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
Never stop playing. I cant say I pick up my guitar as often as I should or used to, but getting into a groove every now and then is the best medicine for relaxation.

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
I haven't played in a band since high school days. Then it was Blue Electric Foam which morphed into The Naked Grape. But my six string acoustic is never far away and gets picked up at least once most days. Anywhere from a quick ditty to an impromptu concert.
No longer am I able to reproduce the songs of my youth, but I have some interesting interpretations. Music gets better with age and helps to work through life's saddest moments. Appearing nightly on the sofa, Dave

Re: I Finally Did It, I'm In A Band!
Find a good Bassist.
There is your "Time Keeper". NOT the Drummer!
