Hydraulic Cylinders
I figured I put this in here because it has to do with hydraulis.
Ok my question is I need to be able to cut a steel wire. Tho I dont have a grand to get a hydro cutter. So what I was thinking was to get a cylider, have hydro tank but instead of the normal vavleing and pump I would pressurerize a tank with hydro fluid to 125PSI then have my vavle(a modded sprinkler valve and then hook that to the ram, and then I will have a super sharp blade on the end to cut the wire. Do you think it would work? Thanks (and I am Osnap, AKA snappers by Slick) |

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
How much steel wire? I use a pair of guy strand ratchet cutters from HK Porter. They were maybe 300 bucks. You can also use a sawzall. You can also use a right angle grinder with a cutoff blade.

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
Right I would do that, but the wire will under some load, and I dont want to be too near it. I was thinking about some 1/2 plate sharpened and a 20lb sledge. It will prob be 3/16 steel cabel

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
What kind of "load" will this cable have on it when you are cutting it?
Excatly what are you trying to do? there could be better ways. |

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
Chat won't work for me. Suffice it to say, there's no way on God's green earth that I'll be within a 1/4 mile of a steel cable that is being cut under load. That's just crazy talk.

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
Crap, could one of the modds move this to offtopic for me? plez
And Iam building a big slingshot to go Punkin Chunkin. And I dont have $800 for a quick release I need some way to release it, so I was going to cut some type of cord/wire to release it. I am still working on the pulling force but it will prob be 200lbs meabey or more. Tho I could meabey use rope, or something like that and use a pruner to cut it. humm... |

Oh geez.....shooting pumkins.....I would think you could find something else worthwhile to do with your time and your money since the "pros" in that sport have already spent the big bucks....
moved to off topic.

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
fluid doesn't compress, what you just described sounds like a widowmaker for sure, use a sheeting shackle

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
That was the pont since the hydro fluid will not compress that is why I was thinking it would work. And when I do cut it like that and if I do, there will be 1/4 plate were I am standing.
I am not going to put to much money in to it, and it is also for school, for the desgin part and the building part. |

Re: Hydraulic Cylinders
There are dozens of release mechanisims much cheaper than what you are proposing. Check out releases for crossbows or trebouchets.
