How Wide Is Too Wide?

Didn't know where to put this so here I go...

My Dad just bought a, new to him, boat.
He is replacing a 22.5' great lakes boat with a
27' Crestliner. The beam is 9'6" and I think the boat
dry weighs 6000 pounds. Basically his new boat is too much for
his old truck.

Here is where I come into play. I need to go pick it up for him, take it to
his house and eventually make one or two trips between Lake Erie and Lake Michigan. He has slips at a few different marina's so the boat stays in the water for a good amount of time.

Here's my question: This thing is 9'6" wide, what is that going to mean to me dragging it down the road? Am I going to get messed with or not?

Do I need some kind of tag or permit or????

I am clueless about this.

You need a "Wide Load" warning sign.
Beyond that, most of the regs are]
online at the BMV and INDOT web sites.

OOPS!
Don't know why this didn't paste....

I will have to go take pictures of the mushrooms he carved with his chainsaw.

My dad loves mushroom hunting. He's old, I dont think he has anything better to do.

Neo, I remembered why I never went back to those two sites any more; they suck. Ok I will get a wide load sign, maybe there is one still on a house trailer in the next town over!!

Re: How Wide Is Too Wide?

Looks like a permit is needed to me.

http://www.indy.gov/eGov/City/CodeEn...ntsMay2007.pdf

Quote:
1. When is a permit needed?
A permit is needed for the movement of a vehicle or a combination of vehicles,
including the load, of a size and/or weight that exceeds the maximum legal size and
weight limits as established by Indiana law [IC 9-20-3, IC 9-20-4]. Except for certain
vehicles, which are given a permit exemption, any transport exceeding these limits
must obtain a permit prior to moving on Indiana highways:
􀂃 Legal width limitation is 8 feet 6 inches.
􀂃 Legal height limitation is 13 feet 6 inches.
􀂃 Legal length limitation of a single vehicle operated under the vehicle's own
motive power is 40 feet;
􀂃 Recreational vehicle is 40 feet.
􀂃 Common carrier of persons is 40 feet.
􀂃 Two-vehicle combination is 60 feet, with a 53-foot limit on the semitrailer. In
addition, a semitrailer longer than 48 feet 6 inches may not be operated on
any Indiana public highway when the distance between the kingpin and the
rearmost axle of the semitrailer exceeds 40 feet 6 inches for semitrailers
manufactured after December 31, 1984; or 42 feet 6 inches for semitrailers
manufactured before January 1,1985.
􀂃 Three-vehicle combination is 65 feet, with a limit of 28 feet 6 inches for each
semitrailer and trailer.
􀂃 Legal weight limitation of 80,000 pounds total gross weight, subject to all
individual axle weights conforming to the Federal Bridge Formula.

In California I believe you need to apply for a permit to move it, the DMV or someone tells you the route you are taking.

Re: How Wide Is Too Wide?

Well I guess for it's maiden trip back to the ranch we will be seeing how nice local law enforcement, INDOT, and ODOT (?? Ohio ??) are to my father. He will be taking full responsibility for all actions (I will inform him of this at the proper time).

Looks like I will have to look into the permit and planning info for the seasonal lake change trips.

Re: How Wide Is Too Wide?

Made it home with it. That boat is freaking huge!!

This thing has not been in the water for over 10 years. It's a 1990 with only 200 hours on it.

I took a picture, I will get it up in a bit.
