"How Much?" -Comebacks

We all see the threads that start "how much should I charge for this?"
We also all know the terror that's about to be unleashed.

Maybe some of these people are new or to suppliment their income are trying new things.
I know they would honestly like to find an answer but they just don't know how irritating it can be for us to give them an honest answer off so little info.
But the comebacks I have seen lately are so very amusing.
I know it would be best to start a sticky so we can let people know they should start a thread like this:
"Does anyone know about installing V.C.T. and live near Dallas Texas? I would like to talk to you about pricing and I am ready to give you the information you need to help me find the correct answer...please PM me if you can help"

Until something like that happens, I would like to see your examples of funny comebacks to these types of questions...
Here are the funniest I have seen...

Measure the exterior of the foundation, then take the square footage, the square footage of the wall and ceiling and use this formula:
a+b) 2 = a 2 + 2ab + b 2

(a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd

a 2 - b 2 = (a+b)(a-b) (Difference of squares)

a 3 b 3 = (a b)(a 2 ab + b 2) (Sum and Difference of Cubes)

x 2 + (a+b)x + AB = (x + a)(x + b)

if ax 2 + bx + c = 0 then x = ( -b (b 2 - 4ac) ) / 2a (Quadratic Formula)

The number you come up with its your profit.

Just answer back with 50 per. 50 what? Per inch? Per foot? Per yard? Per sq? Who cares. Just leave them mind boggled as most likely they won't try to push the issue and be shown as a total nitwit.

I just got a bid on a roof that works out to about $1600 per square, is that too much?

I'll do it for that. I don't need the details....and I don't have a clue how to do it but for that price, I'll be a damn quick learner.

For Purple Vermont Slate, you would lose about $ 1,000.00 per square, even if you did not charge for labor.

Would you still do a job unspeified and unseen?

Is that for a small, medium or large square?

Re: "How Much?" -Comebacks

Ed,

This is about 52 squares of Certain-Teed FRP-C-83 modified bitumen roof system,1.5" tapered 1/8" slope Iso and 1/2" high density wood fiber cover board.

It has about 3 squares of standing seam 24 guage Kynar galvanized steel roofing with 2" insulation as well and 4 stainless steel scuppers.

for $4,950 they will go to 1/4" taper giving me an R32 instead of 1/8" taper giving me an average R19.95.

This is a re roof, it currently has a BUG roof on it and we are adding some additional roof systems like the standing seam, and the elevator and stairwell, plus 2 small bump outs that are Certain-Teed self adhereing SBS system, less than 1 square total.

I was just making a comment, that "Blindly Thinking" that a price is on the high side, could get you in definite trouble.

That was for labor only. Yes, I'll still work for that.
