I had a similar thought. Might work dependingon what is to be placed inside. Put a piano hinge on one drawer so that it drops to the inside and down when closed out of the way of the sliding drawer.

Interesting project. May need to also put drop-down rails on it the drop-down drawer.

We received a plan from a truss company years ago that had two girders crossing through each other. Rep told me " The program wouldn't allow that to happen" Guess the program had a glitch cause it happened.

Make a good hidden stash for whatever. Drop-down drawer drops down behind a fake back. Decorative moldings on front, one of which is a twist type locking mechanism.
