Re: Good Thing It Wasn't Take Your Pet To Work Day.

That's cute and sweet and all, but a bit unprofessional on the part of that controller.

The co-op I am working with on a current industrial job let his 5 year old go for a ride (straight up and down) on a 30' scissors lift yesterday and he and I were both in the basket and he had a hand around her arm the whole time.

It's fun to let them have a little fun and see what Daddy works on sometimes, and that is about at the upper limits of what I would allow, but that controller was just asking for a reprimand from the FAA with that one.

When I told my 7 year old about it, she now wants to go for a ride too but same as yesterday, it will be strictly supervised.

And I'm sure Dad was watching him like a hawk. (at least I hope so)

If the pilots' laptops were on, they might not have even noticed.

That is f'n awesome.

Grounds for firing, gas him.

In a situation like that the chance of the kid saying one minor thing different, word, number, whatever, and not being caught by whoever is telling them what to say is too great. No way in hell that should have happened.

On the other hand, he was not giving out vital info.

Friend of mine brought his kid along to look at a job, new construction. Where's the kid? Oh, here he is, he fell in this 4 foot deep hole and just missed the rebar. He's fine.

I bet the passengers on the planes have a different perspective.

On the one hand, I heard no vital info just basic "identification" lingo, but with all the whoppla surrounding air travel over the past decade, I do agree that it was'nt the smartest thing to do. Heck, the pilots even had fun with it, figure this is what they do day in and day out, they know their routine, their runway so i dont see much harm in it, but should the plane happen to hit a flock of geese and go down, naturally it'd be the traffic controllers fault for having the kid say good to go to each plane as it prepared to taxi.

My daughter is 9 and for now we're strictly home based for "construction help", and I agree, it's scarey what they pick up on. I was giving orders at her age in cub scouts when we did activites, and she is "the head strong one" at school barking orders to her classmates during activity time...a big conversation piece at every conference she's ever had to date. I got a kick out of her riding my brother while we did my privacey fence out back....95*F that day, she was helping me hump panels to each spot in the 350' perimeter while my brother was consistantly MIA. She called him out each time LOL!!
"Where the heck have you been?"
"If all your going to do is sit in the house and watch us work, maybe you need to just go home"
"Your getting another glass of water? Do you plan on working today"
"Jeez, I've done more work than you today"

Worst part, she was spot on, and it's sick on my part employing him since his actions like this are common place....I'm stuck between the perverbial rock and hard place with employing family.

I think I'm going to feel bad for whoever she dates in the future, she'll defiantely wear the pants and will be hell on wheels since she has the look and already definately has the attitude

Re: Good Thing It Wasn't Take Your Pet To Work Day.

The worst issue was with the many pilots who did not question the obvious voice of a child giving take off clearance. As a pilot, it would have raised my "alert", but then, it didn't bother the pilots involved...so I suspect, we are only hearing about the "edited" portions of the communications. Also, the dad said this is the next generation of ATC controllers.

Good dad !
Well, it boils down to folks "thinking" the kid had people's lives in their hands, and since lives were on the line on the taxi runway, this is the worse thing to ever happen since man has been on earth Practically thinking, I'm sure the dad had a headset on as well, and did'nt just say "here kid, take the mic. papa's goin for coffee and a smoke, I'll be back in a little bit....just ask for help if you need it.

Public outcry, but thinking with your head instead of emotions, I think it's a safe bet nobody's lives were in any sort of danger, if the situation was such obviously the supervisor, pilots, staff around this fella woulda had a fit, but what seems like a big deal to those out of the loop (those who dont tell aircraft where to taxi too) I'm sure flying off the handle is the first natural response....which it is, and now the witch hunt and "make an example of him" are goin in full effect.

Makes ya wonder why President Obama did'nt get suspended for ordering the air force one pictures flying close to the ground near new york city for the photo op.

everybody needs to beeotch about something all the time, that is all.

no, not really...the kid is'nt operating the plane- the pilots are. To think these pilots dont know the routine by the time they're certified to haul passengers on a air bus is ludicris. IF the pilots were suspecious of a directive, they would've questioned it. It's more like the kid telling the operator which lever to pull....you dont think a seasoned crane operator already knows WTF he's doing? and would say something if the kid said "hit the drop lever once it's over the crowd"??

you might be right there...the crowd of people should have refused to sat there while the kid was operating....and the pilots should have shut their planes off until they knew the tower was in compliance with a trained, competent person.

all you need to do, is google...."near misses, airports"....the statistics might change your line of thought
