Frankendog
Friends of mine have an Australian Terrier. Cute little thing; full of energy and a great mouser. A couple of weeks ago, she got excited about something and jumped off Dad's lap--and tore a ligament.
Last week she had surgery for it--a specialist, of course; that procedure is a little highfalutin' for a regular vet. $2500 later, she was all set for Halloween.

Cdat, saw your post before it was apparently removed by an overzealous moderator.

Glad to see your friend's family member is OK.
Probably a PITA for them to keep the little bugger from acting normal and tearing them.
How long before they get removed?
We have three pooches and thankfully nothing major as far as vets.

A .22 shell is really cheap.
I like dogs but, I am not going to pay for an operation for a dog.

Yeah, guys, I hear you.
OTOH, keep in mind that these folks are in their mid-sixties, and this is their baby. I grew up on a farm, where animals were commercial goods, and got "repaired" only when economically justifiable. We ate our friends every year at butchering time.
But somewhere, there's a certain rightness in the commandments of SWMBO when it comes to the maintenance of a family member like that. If there's any way you can afford it, you'll most likely do it.

Wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs, two cats. How come a mention of burlap is removed but shooting one isn't? Ain't that some odd moderation?

At one time I thought so too and have taken care of a couple of them. Had a boxer that snapped at a friends 8 YO daughter once....We went hunting.
We have a lab now that was hit by a car. 4 operations and $3,700 later we still have the dog. There were extenuating circumstances around it though. He was just over a year old at the time. He's now 2 and every time I wach him playing with the grand daughter I think it was money well spent.

We're fortunate enough to have a friend who is a vet and doesn't know squat about lawn care or landscaping. You fix my broken dog, I fix your broken tree. It's been working out pretty good for a couple years now.

I was thinking about you when I wrote the OP.
I'd like to say you have the record, but... I have a sister in law who's, um, out there a bit. She and her long-suffering husband spent about $8K on a mutt over nearly a year. Chemo and radiation treatments for cancer. He didn't survive.
And he wasn't even a good dog, in any sense. Go figure.
