Found Tools

I've rode bikes for years, and always pick up tools I find.

I have over a hundered sockets I've found, a couple hammers, screw drivers, various wrenches. I found a nice set of loppers once, and the other day, I found this:

Remington 479. Havent tried it yet, but aside form being scratched up, it seems to be in working order.

All I ever find is nails and screws which I generally place into my tires for safe keeping.

Re: Found Tools

Last year I found a near mint condition (except for some light surface rust)
Ohio Tool Co. draw knife that had been walled up in a stud bay for a lot of years. Hickory handles and all.
Nice, but doesn't seem to be called into service very often when I'm framing.

Where the hell are you finding tools? Back of pickup trucks?

I found a chain saw in the middle of the road and my Dad found a cordless Milwaukee 14.4 volt drill.

Only in trucks with GOP bumper stickers on them. I don't even bother looking in Dem stickered trucks anymore.

My found tool collection represents 20+ years of cyclng. I've also found a few dozen key rings.

I found a cop's cell phone once. He lost it with his badge wallet and basically accused me of finding and keeping his badge. He nagged me for weeks about it. Ungrateful bastid. I should have tossed the phone in the ocean.

On Oahu, contractors are having tools stolen out of the backs of there trucks while stopped at traffic lights. Punk kids run up, grab what they can and book...That's fubar, and is deserving of being shot on site IMO.

That's why many Aussie tradies have a ute dog (utility vehicle security device). Stick your hand in the wrong truck and you retrieve a bloody stump.

The most common sockets are probably, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16 and 5/8, so what are you finding? Do you have a whole pile of the same size sockets? You can buy a complete socket set at Sears, metric and standard for under a hundred bucks.

Re: Found Tools

I went to the dump about 15 years ago. The truck in front of me had a nice new foxtail brush sitting on the bumper. As soon as he hit the rough road, it fell off. I stopped and picked it up but the guy in front of me was long gone and in quite a hurry. I still have the brush.

Hammers, I found 3 last year in snow piles right by my drive way, and no they weren't mine, but they are now.

What the hell is going on here, how come I'm not finding a bunch of tools? I did find a rusty vise-grip pliers once.

Re: Found Tools

Does it count when you find stuff in the garage that you didn't know you had?

Yes! For me that's like free tools. A while back in my "shop", I opened an old .50 Cal ammo can and discovered that I had stashed some good Marshalltown drywall knives in there years ago when I moved.
I had thought it was full of roofing nails all this time.

Many, many, many duplicates. And I have decent sets I got from Sears. Still...free tools are free tools. And they're great for loaners. When the neighbor or my brother cals and wants to borrow tools, I hand them the box of unsorted "found" tools. No biggie if they lose something.

Anyway, they're all going away. My nephew's class is looking for donations for a fund riser rummage sale. I'm donating the tools.

Re: Found Tools

My best tool find was after a train hit a Snap-On tool truck in Newton, NC. The driver escaped unharmed and we dug through the bushes for a week.

Good to hear no injuries.
