Fly Fishing In The UP

Anyone here fly fish for the fall salmon or brook trout run in Michigan's Upper Peninsula? The wife and I are going to take a small trip up there from Green Bay as shes been dieing to do some fly fishing, and its been a long time since I did it last.

If anyone's got any info I would appreciate it. I have a couple websites I checked, but would like to hear first hand from someone on the board.

Thanks

Sorry, that is top secret info. Passed from father to son for generations. I can not believe someone would ever divulge that info to anyone outside of Michigan.

6String, try johndee d o t com & do a search in the discussion boards. That should bring some good info to you.

It is kind of funny that the guys from the lower would give you a hard time about this, though!

I've 4-wheeled & snowmobiled in the UP for years, & in my experiences , most yoopers would rather associate themselves with WI than the lower part of their state. No offense to the lower by any means, but most of Northen WI is very similar to the UP. WI residents are FAR more accepted than IL folks for sure, though!

Hey, just kidding around. Any mason that likes to fish is cool in my book. Just find some water and throw a line in, it's all good!

By the way what's up with your boy Brett Farve?

Re: Fly Fishing In The UP

The post on Alaska is true anyone can catch a fish there (Kenai river) at the right time. You would have to go far upstream to get room and fly fishing. I fished the Kenia several times and would like the time to fish the far upper end with a flyrod.

The UP is different. I assume you may be looking at the southern shore and you will find fall salmon up to the first barrier. Brookies are more numerous above that, but there may be problems getting to the water and walking upp the streams. I always took my tackle with me when I ran between the upper-lower, across the big bridge while commuting to St. Paul. In late fall, be prepare for weather changes every 1/2 hour.

I an nor familiar with superior side since that ocean has a mind of it own and totally controls weather. The terrain is different. and can be rugged.

The best source is a local bait shop and figure on spending a day or some doing some learing and exploring. Good county raods mapa are valuable. - I always had better luck with "garden hackles" and spinners for rainbows and even some brookies.

Some of the rivers/streams that have salmon may have stronger currents (salmon needs the strong flow) that make flies difficult. Also, take a look at the Brule river and similar rivers in Wisconsin that flow north into Superior.

Just a learners opinion.

Re: Fly Fishing In The UP

I appreciate the info fellas!

The wife doesnt want to drive too far since were going without the 2 year old, which I said there is NO WAY were bringin him fly fishing lol. I'd have to be a glutton for punishment. I was planning on the Laughing Whitefish River or even the Manistique, but but those were too far away for her. So I settled on Gladstone and will try the Escanaba and Day Rivers. They come off of Little Bay De Noc and are said to have some decent salmon fall run. If all else fails, I still plan on bringing the boat and we can head to open water and try for some northern, smallies, or walleye. Either way it will be nice to get out of town.

And I do have some pics of my wife. The clean ones are free, but I'd have to charge ya for the others. :P

You will see a lot of Walleye fishermen on the bay off Escanaba and northward.

Re: Fly Fishing In The UP

Well, since you are going with the wife, a detour stop of at Spread Eagle Wisconsin might be out of order.

I remember going up to Iron Mountain for a job 10 years ago and was shocked to see what such a little town had to offer.

http://goldnugget12.tripod.com/

They served really good food there, from what I remember.

I can only remember going brook trout fly fishing with my Uncle who owned a farm in Iron River when i was a little kid, so all I remember was the cool wooden fish basket thing to put the fish in.

Me and my cousin were too busy tearing off ears of corn and pretending they were hand grenades to learn much about that style and art of fishing.

Camp Lake had some real good quality rainbow trout to go for and they were getting caught in abundance when I was in my teens.

6string, I'll admit I know nothing about fishing, but when in Escanaba, make sure you take the time to stop @ Hereford & Hops!
