Wrong number lands accused pot sellers in jail

On Oct. 7, James Edwin Ramey Jr. of Warne mistakenly sent a text message to an employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Chief Deputy Tom Frye said they were in a staff meeting when an employee received the text message from someone trying to sell her marijuana, but Ramey had the wrong number.

Frye texted back to Ramey and arranged for delivery of two ounces of marijuana for $450. The meeting was arranged for the parking lot of McDonald's in Murphy that evening. Sheriff Keith Lovin said Ramey had a friend who had drugs. Ramey and Kenneth James Gauthier of Hayesville were surprised when their meeting turned out to be with Frye and other law enforcement personnel.

The men, both in their 20s, were charged with maintaining a vehicle for distribution of a controlled substance, simple possession of marijuana and sale/delivery of marijuana. The men were placed under $8,500 bond each. Also, the Ford pickup the men drove to the delivery spot was seized by the sheriff's office.

$450 for two ounces! That's cheap. Tiz yet another reason I prefer calling over texting. And of all the wrong numbers to have, the Sheriff? This will make Paul Harvey for sure. Mark my words. I wonder if that truck is for sale yet, I need a huntin' truck. (minus the dope)
