Driving To Canada...what Do I Need?

Anyone know the actual real current I.D. requirements for me and my family, U.S. citizens all, to drive into Canada?

I'm getting a lot of mixed info here
Near as I can tell, everyone over 18 needs a drivers lic.?

Do we need birth cert. also?

I have the info that for driving, no passport is needed right now (got pushed off again and won't need one fr driving for a year or two)

Not sure about the birth cert. (or copy of birth cert) or anything else

Thanks!

I know of one story when I was in Seattle these 4 kids came back through with hemp bracelets and shoe strings and the drug dogs went nuts on them. Strip searched them. So.....don't go and get hemp stuff LOL.

I'm pretty sure you will need your passport, which if you don't have it now, you better get on it. It can take awhile just for that.

My parents just left for Alaska and they got their passport, though I'm not positive you absolutely need it.

Slick, I would get a passport for everybody. It's cheap insurance. BTW, speaking of insurance, are you covered for all medical if you are injured or get sick? FYI, most restaurants and stores accept american money at par nowadays. You should also bring your winter coat and snow boots and put the snow tires on your truck

The horses mouth is here: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p.../cis_1082.html

Have fun! I have always had a good time with Canadians although there was that ONE time when they lost a hocky cup to us. Being one of two Americans in a large bar full of drunk, angry Canadians was a little intimidating.

Re: Driving To Canada...what Do I Need?

Thanks Guys
Thanks Teetor, the State Dept. say "Be Prepared" to show a Govt. Photo ID., and proof of citizenship
I still can't find out if a non-raised seal copy of a birth cert. will work

Appreciate the advice to just get the passports
The thing is, we were going to get passports months ago when we planned the trip
Then decided it wasn't worth it (100 bucks a pop) as we didn't really need them
Then they pushed the passport req. for air travel up
We started to panic, and decided we should get them
Well, since they moved the deadline, then they were so backed up, we wouldn't get them in time anyway
Now they are so backed up with everybody scrambling to get them, they had to push the air travel req. back (to what it was orig.), and the car travel req. they pushed off for another year (2009)

As we are leaving next week, we probably won't have time to get them now...lol...
They are saying it's a 6 months wait after app. now

Make sure you have tire chains. July is not so bad, but August storms can be brutal.

You need to have your head examined, why Canada?

But if you insist, bring something with a rainbow if you're going to Toronto.

I know they were talking about requiring passports, but I don't think that went through yet because there's a major back-log on passports in this country. But usually it's a good idea to have your birth certificate and something else to verify the info on it, like a driver's license.

What's wrong with Canada eh? Its a beautiful country with lots to ofer for a great vacation. For the most part we are all happy good time loving people who welcome visitors. And with the exchange rate on your dollar it makes for a cheap vacation for you to.

The exchange rate is pretty much 1:1 now when you include exchange fees.

Keep your reciepts and collect back ALL your Getting Screwed Together (GST) tax when you leave the country.

photo id and birth certificate. Will fly at the moment. But it won't in the very near future get passports for the whole family. Price for passport about 100 per person. 90-120 day wait.
