Did My Brakes Today

There had been some noise coming from my truck when I put the brakes on. Lately has been all the time, brakes or no. Kind of sounds like the rumble strip when you hit it on the highway.

Finally broke down and went to the auto parts place to get all new brake parts, and my pedal went to the floor, but still could stop. I gingerly drove home with plenty of distance with the emergency flashers on. I definitely shouldn't have. Took off my rear right wheel to find this:

I suspect that you may have a sticky caliper on that wheel.

How do the others look?

Are you gonna reuse that rotor, it could still have a few miles left on it.

If the brakes went all the way to the floor..sounds like a master cylinder.

Re: Did My Brakes Today

believe it or not, the calipers are fine. I found that the piston pushed right out of the caliper itself, leaking brake fluid everywhere of course. grabbed some gentle clamps and pushed them back in (the pistons). I am going to watch it because I think I may have broke the seal too much, it will leak.

I still had SOME brake pad left, but not much. I just don't see how this happens really. I know I let them go, but how in hell does the surface of the rotor disappear completely?

truck cruelty....you don't know....

I'm awful with my vehicles.

Re: Did My Brakes Today

That happened to my van in college, although the other half of the disc was still there at least.

Jeez man, stuff like that is not only a real killer, but it's also a deal killer when you show up to a client meeting limping in on your last legs.

I did that to a vehicle once, scariest thing hitting the brakes finally and have the wheel turn to the left...into traffic. Got home and fixed it right quick

Re: Did My Brakes Today

The calpier pistons are not the "sticky caliper" that was mentioned.

The caliper ALSO rides/floats on two metal shafts. If theses shafts are not clean and mildly greased, the caliper WILL stick by way of not sliding away from the rotor. (one side of the rotor and one pad will be more worn)

It is imperative that you clean and grease these stays/guide bolts prior to reassembly.

Re: Did My Brakes Today

actually, I was surprised that the rear ones didn't have this guide bolt. The fronts do, but the backs don't. That would make too much sense to make the front and back the same. First vehicle I've owned that has had read disc brakes.
