Re: Did Anyone Watch The Preakness?

Honestly, I bawled like a 2yr old.

I know it's totally silly but I absolutely love animals, especially horses, so when Barbaro broke down, it hit me really hard. I've followed every story I can find about how the surgery went and paced the floors yesterday like a worried parent. I won't truly feel relieved until I know he's in a pasture somewhere frolicing waiting for his next filly to breed.

It was truly a sad day in horse racing.. we'll never know if Barbaro was the next Superhorse or not. I just pray daily that he is not in pain and does not suffer complications and die after all. I wouldn't wish that on any animal.

Time for another box of tissues...

Well my family deals in high end horses such as this and I will tell from a inside perspective that these horses are pushed overboard when it comes to this sport.

All aced up and on serious drugs are most of them.

I have done the same as you.

I am an avid horse lover and I just as you have followed numerous news stories about his condition etc...

I think it shows what kind of man Edgar is just watching him break down after knowing Barbaro was hurt. He is a true legend and a gentleman.

Hopefully things will go good, and he will heal with no problems.

Have you seen any of the ex-rays?

If not, I can link you one, it is astonishing.

Re: Did Anyone Watch The Preakness?

As bad as it is, Adam is right about some horses. There are horse owners/trainers/jockey's who don't care about the animal and do overpush, but I don't think there was ANYTHING else that Edgar, Micheal or anyone could have done better for Barbaro than what has been done and will continue to be done. I'm sure stud service plays a factor, but grown men do not shed tears over fallen horses in this sport when it's all business to them, they euthanize right on the track and don't look back. Barbaro got top notch treatment from the moment it happened and Edgar pulled him back. He earned my top respect right there.

And yeah Cole, I've seen the before and after surgery x-rays. Heartwrenching.. The latest word is the most uplifting thing I had read yet but even it still has dark clouds lingering because they say it could be 6 months or more before they can rule out death due to complications. I hope they don't stop covering it with news or else I'll have to figure out how to find out how things are going. It will drive me nuts to just sit and wonder. I'm a nutcase, I know it already.

Everyone is speculating what exactly went wrong, and of course we will never know.. but my theory is when he jumped the buzzer and had the false start that maybe the force he was clawing to get out created a hole or something in the track in his lane and upon re-start, he just happened to step into it again. He couldn't have done it on the false start or else he'd never been able to walk back around and re-post. For the pastern to be shattered into 20 fragments AND two other breaks above and below, it had to be a twisting type injury.

I know I am setting myself up for false hopes and disappointment, and I have enough sense to know that it's factually impossible, but somewhere... in the very depths of my mind...lurks the thoughts of the movie "Dreamer"... and how it was based on a true story... could it happen again?

Well, I will keep looking for news stories in the future and I will keep you updated with any new news I may find.

I think with Barbaro's injuries it would be almost physically impossible to race again, but hey you never know.

I watched racing for a long time. I still feel like the Derby saved this horses life. If this would have happened at the start of the Derby they would have put him down right on the track in a spilt second. Winning the derby made him more valuable as a stallion. I hope im wrong though.

I gotta say, and this may seem rather crass, but a horse is really nothing more than a really fast cow.
My double cheese burger at lunch was no less worthy of finding its way in between a bun than a faster four legged beast that people ride, whip, and wage money on.....

Re: Did Anyone Watch The Preakness?

Barbaro on Friday: His Condition Is Excellent
Five days after undergoing surgery, Barbaro was in excellent condition, according to a report from the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

"He looks good, everything is fine, and his appetite is particularly good," said Dr. Dean Richardson, the chief of surgery at the hospital, in a statement issued at 11 a.m. (EDT) Friday.

Barbaro fractured his right hind leg above and below the ankle during the May 20 running of the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). The injuries to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands winner were both career-ending and life-threatening.

I really don't see why this "sport" is necessary. It should be done away with.

Sorry, I disagree.
Horses love to run.
So do the sled dogs here in AK.

I just can't agree with that.
