Deadliest Catch Could You?

So who could do the job they do on deadliest catch?
If I was healthy I could do it, not that I would want to.

Re: Deadliest Catch Could You?

I know a guy that owns a boat, and fishes for halibut in the Bearing Strait, so basically the same job as on deadliest catch, other than that he is hauling fish off of long lines, rather than crabs out of cages. One time he made $24000 in 24 hours of work on the boat, but on the other hand, it would be easy for a wave to take you off the boat, or a four inch long barbed hook to catch you and drag you off the boat. They went down to off the coast of California one time, and while they were down there, a storm rolled in. All the local fishermen went into dock because of the big storm, but they said that in the worst of the storm, it was about normal for the bearing strait.

Re: Deadliest Catch Could You?

I think I could handle the physical work, but we would have to be catching crab from a field somewhere.

I like Terra Firma...

I couldn't handle the cold. These guys are the ones that show up on your snowed in job site in February wearing shorts.

If it wasn't cold, and I was 20 years younger....I have never tolerated the cold well....

I watched some of the show last night where they talked about the smell of the men & the living quarters. One guy was hanging with a dead fish 'cause it smelled better than the other crew members.

I could do the work and handle the cold and things, but I get sea sick sometimes, not all the time tho. Weird.

Me, not a chance. My luck I'd go overboard in a crab pot and end up bait.
Great show though.

Re: Deadliest Catch Could You?

My wife met Captain Jonathan Hilstrand of the Time Bandit at the bar a few nights ago.
He lives in Homer but was hangin around at anchorage for some reason.
I thought of trying to be a greenhorn for a season to see if I can do it.
Not sure if I will ever get to trying...

I would guess they have a lot of applicants now for any slot.....with the publicity they get. I know a guy who films reality shows and commercials and he told me they have security now at OCC and Boyd Coddington's shop....all the people who try to get in the door......

I still think we need a show called American Contractor.

There you go!

Ever looked into that? There was a TOH episode in my area in which many contractors turned down because of the misery you needed to go through to accomodate the filming. I eat lunch somtimes with the plumbing contractor who made it on the show, and he just plowed through with his work as normal, and be damned with the show. That didn't make them happy, but there was nothing in his contract that would make him slow down or stop for the filming. He even unplugged them once because their cord to some lighting was in his way. "Way to go!", I say.

It might be popular, but I doubt I would want to watch it- after framing all day, when I get off work, the last thing I want to do is drop down in front of the tube and watch a show about what I did all day.

Re: Deadliest Catch Could You?

How many difference seasons do they have?

How long is a season (a week or months)?

How much can they make in a year?

Do they really need to blur out the cover of playboy for the tv viewers?

Re: Deadliest Catch Could You?

This season was startling with the 'hiring methods' they exposed.

I loved how they hired that one dufus off of a bar stool.

Hard to believe guys out there who have been doing that for 20 years or more, some in multiple generations, would even think about taking some unknown idiot out to sea where this individuals contributions has some influence on the life or death of the crew members.

Is it only me or is Sig Hansen like the only guy out there with some sort of intelligence? This guy runs the tightest ship in the fleet, he runs his ship well and his guys always make more money than anybody else.
