The Cost Of A Breach

A few here will know of this story. Hannaford supermarkets, based in Florida, many stores on the east coast, was breached by hackers. They didn't realize for quite awhile that the credit and debit card numbers had been stolen. So the banks are going to re-issue cards.

Cost to banks? More than I ever would have thought.

Quote:
Daudelin said his credit union expects to issue about 14,000 new cards to customers at a cost -- including administrative time, mailings to customers and the cards themselves -- of about $10 to $12 per card. That will cost Town & Country at least $140,000.
Hannaford, they figured was hacked Dec. 7th and they didn't find out until almost March. Talk about not paying attention.

Quote:
Hannaford announced Monday that the data was stolen from its computer network, possibly on Dec. 7, while credit card authorizations were being transmitted. The theft was detected on Feb. 27. No names or addresses were accessed, only card numbers and their expiration dates, the company said.

The Massachusetts Bankers Association said more than 300,000 cards in Massachusetts were affected. An estimated 4.2 million cards may have been exposed from New England to Florida, and 1,800 cases of fraud have been reported so far in such locales as Houston, Detroit, San Francisco, France and Brazil.

Re: The Cost Of A Breach

I went over this long time ago, but this is not the first breach

Check out. Privacyrights.org You'll be surprised on who you will find in there.

These are total records lost, not the number of people that may be affected
