Contractor's Ruuulzzzz

workin on a site- about 9-10 of us. there are rules...

1. no cutting 2x4's on the chop saws- you gotta go get a skil saw.

2. no cutting standard sheathing plywood on the table saw- you gotta use the small portable.

3. no starting work before 7:30 am - I asked today cause I'm there at 7am anyway, I leave home early to beat the traffic- he can't keep track of everyone yada yada....

4. no lasers- anything over 2' horizontal use a transit- over 2' vertical we hang a plumb bob - I've been 4 days now lining a window- 7' x 12' - shims, plum/square etc..

5. back prime everything.

6. can't leave the site till 4pm exactly.

most of these rules I can live with, no prob. the no 2x4's on the chop saws has me puzzled though- foreman thinks that we will dull a blade... well that might be true, but we're using 8 1/4" hitachi's, with ripping blades- for finishing work!!!!!!!!!!!! and I got grief because I want a working guard on the saw... huh.... then today he tried to give me hell for taking someone else's jigsaw- except after he got done venting his spleen he noticed my name on the side of the jig saw- I just stood there and looked at him - he went red and hustled away... I know its always tough to fit in when yr new (three weeks) but after a while it gets tiresome - more incentive to keep beating the bushes for side jobs

k I'm done bitchin now

What a craptastic day. Hopefully he felt like a dork for reaming you out for no reason.

Is it Miller time? (or Pepsi time?)

Sounds like a desk job to me. Do this act like your busy till 4, cant start early because that might show initiative. Got to serve the man. Some body ever yelled at me for using my own jigsaw that is time to say goodbye.

Re: Contractor's Ruuulzzzz

well ya- I'm not the boss - there are 3 for the nine carps/apprentices.. its fun work, I can do the rules, but the foreman has a bad attitude- constantly negative - they sent him off to "sensativity" training- this after five apprentices quit the week before I started..
you know the type- he's been on the job forever, he knows his stuff- short, shuffles, small man syndrome - you can't ask a question without it turning into a "big man on campus" attitude.. I just look at him in amazement.. and no, I won't be there long.. life is too short to tolerate goof balls like that
I guess it was bound to happen, the last few sites that I was on (different companies) the foremen were great- firm, up front, but you could respect them, and they treated you like a person. it improves the work quality.

its a tempest in a tea pot -I keep focusing on my own goals

ok, time to make the p/b sanwiches and coffee off to work!
have a good one!

Mr. Mac - with all due respect .... but this is some pretty petty stuff

although i don't see the 2x4 thing either (but perhaps there's a reason)

and

remember

it's construction

there's only really smart people ... and really dumb people ... wouldn't take much from either to heart

Re: Contractor's Ruuulzzzz

ya well, I guess I keep expecting the world to be fair I know, it aint gonna happen - no biggie, just sometimes a guy needs to vent a bit

I think I got past that foreman now- been ignoring his "crap" and just answering him like he was a buddy - so this week? well he's actually almost pleasant! what's up with that? I aint gonna question it though.... starting to have a good time at this job, I really like doing trim work

he did get a laugh on me friday though, he came through where I was workin in a hallway putting in baseboard - blam! huge fart oh man! I did yell at that point - hence his laugh - what'cha gonna do? made me appreciate the blower that's built into my hitachi finish nailer...
thinkin though what'd happen if'n I tossed a match... hehehehehe

Re: Contractor's Ruuulzzzz

Without knowing anything about your job site, I would guess some of your bosses rules have to do with blade wear and what blades are on the saws at what time.

It could be a lot worse, you sound like you are working for somebody with some systems in place and will teach you something useful, the alternative is a dumb ass with no ideas, rules or systems about anything.

While you probably know just about everything about construction and contracting already at your young age, if you park the ego you might end up learning a few useful things by accident.

Your foreman sounds like he might have met maybe 2 or three hundred guys just like you over the course of his career... he probably figures you're just another dumb ass punk kid, like 9 out of 10 before you, until you prove him otherwise. Believe it or not, he's probably going to be there long after you are gone, so he probably has the right to think this way, also being your supervisor might give him the right too.

Like I said, I would dumb down and see what you might just learn.

reminds me of an hbo documentary on street pimps...

I recall one pimp telling the interviewer... " the only way to learn to be a great pimp is by watching an older & wiser pimp"

I appreciate the compliment Mike! and yes I am learning lots on this site - its what makes it fun. as for being a "dumb ass kid" I am way the heck over 50 dude... as I said I was venting - lighten up! it is what it is, and at the end of the day it isn't important.
