Columbia River Record Fish!!

Bruce Kruk lands 359-lb Rainbow
Trail B.C.
--Bruce Kruk, who blindfolds his friends to keep his favorite fishing spot secret has come up with a record-beating fish
-- a rainbow trout weighing 359.1 pounds. The giant hauled in by Bruce Kruk of TrailBC is 12 ounces above the previous
Columbia River record, a BC biologist confirmed
It's been cut down to fillets. The first fillet weighed 53 pounds, Bruce said. He caught it near a
chemical outflow on the Columbia River . He won't give a more specific description.

'I put myself in a harness and just had to lay back and fight,' Bruce said. 'It was about a 15 or 20 minute fight.' Bruce cleaned the fish late Monday afternoon. 'We'll split it up,' he said.
'I'll make some phone calls and try to get rid of it fresh.
The rest, we'll vacuum pack it and cook it later.' Bruce says he believes the fish is about 33 years old. He plans

to send an inner-ear bone called the otolith to a university in Victoria where researchers can help determine the
age of the fish. He hopes to get the results in about four weeks.
The world record, caught in BC in 1985, is 436 pounds, 12 ounces.

This was about 15 min from my house.

Re: Columbia River Record Fish!!

Current world record came out of Lake Diefenbaker in Sask. in 2007

LINK

I have no idea WTF is in the picture but it sure ain't a trout...looks salt water for sure...
Wife just found a pic of a record black sea bass that looks quite a bit like that "trout".
It's 384 pounds and caught in 1900.

Cheers, Ron

Edit: those are Barracuda in the last picture (on the left)...when did they get that far up the Columbia?

TY skyhook. I didn't take the time to verify any of this, just thought it was a crazy big fish.

Re: Columbia River Record Fish!!

Even if it were true, I still would never eat a fish I caught out of the Columbia... especially one caught near a chemical outflow pipe from Cominco... ever see the episode of The Simpsons with the 3 eyed fish? bet there's hundreds of those suckers swimming around that place.

Re: Columbia River Record Fish!!

My folks live in Creston and I've spent a pile of time fishing in the Kootenay's...

The Rainbows in the Columbia watershed do run pretty big...I've taken two big mothers out of Kootenay lake...

...26 1/2 lbs (down 100+ feet on the ball, with a flasher/smelt in a harness) and 28 lbs (on the surface, planerboard /bucktail hair jig). The bigger of the two was on light tackle (the "extra" rod); 20lb test line...took an hour and fifteen minutes to boat the fish.

A bad day of fishin' beats a good day of workin' hands down...

Cheers, Ron

My wife is the one who does most of the fishing, she loves it... she'd go every day if she could... wait, she can, I live about 100' from the Columbia River.

I'm usually just the guardian of the cooler

and the guy who kills the fish... she doesn't like that part

Actually I think king crabs are over rated I prefer fresh caught dungies.

Re: Columbia River Record Fish!!

the truth on this photo is... It's a Warsaw Grouper and was caught by a man named JJ out of Louisiana. It was caught in the early summer of 2008. The other smaller fish in the pictures are smaller grouper, snappers and two wahoo's.

Re: Columbia River Record Fish!!

Columbia River fishing holes

1. Triploid Trout == Rufus Woods, these fish are raised in pens and released when they get to big for restaurant use. Up to 30i+ LB. Usally 4 - 10 LB

2. McNary, John Day == Big sturgeon up to 18 ft long. Steelies, Salmon small mouth bass

3. Bonnieville == 1st dam on the river and all most of the salmon run cruises through

4. Buoy 10 at the mouth. All the salmon cruise through here, but its a big area and you need to find the fish.

Springer season very soon. Record Run, we will see.
