Cleaning The Gas Grill

I thought that this might be topical seeing as how Spring has sprung in most parts.

My grill gets year 'round use and can get pretty grungy over time. Now is that time. I was curious about techniques used to tackle this filthy mess without killing the lawn or staining the driveway.

My first thought was to take it to a vacant lot and hit it with a steam cleaner but that would take a lot of effort, probably make a total mess out of me and remove all of the seasoning. The grates are a no-brainer. I'm talking about all of the really nasty, greasy stuff on the burners, in the bottom and drip pan.

Re: Cleaning The Gas Grill

I prefer charcoal because it gives off more green house gases than propane. But our swim club has self-serve gas grills that tend to get grungy so when I'm going to cook there I just fire 'em up a couple hours ahead of time on high, close the lid, and let everything in there turn to carbon. As long as the grates are clean I'm happy.

Re: Cleaning The Gas Grill

Ive used Easy-Off Grill & Oven cleaner. I remove all the removable parts and take them to my utility sink and spray the heck out of them. Let them sit awhile with the Easy-Off till the gunk comes off. I use a steel wire brush to get the nooks and cranny's clean. Rinse real well, replace the parts and turn the grill on. I heat the grill (without food) once before actually using it to burn off any possible fumes/remains of the Easy-Off.

As for the 'body' of the grill, you can spread some large plastic sheets/bags under it to prevent the Easy-Off from ruining your grass. Use the Easy-Off in the body of the grill, steel brush it clean, rinse it well and heat the grill up REAL HOT with ALL the cleaned parts in place.
You'll have a grill that looks like new.

So.... what time will dinner be served!

Re: Cleaning The Gas Grill

Patty, that sounds doable when this wind lays down some.

The target date is Thursday. Porterhouse and Steve's wild orange shrimp are on the menu.

Don't laugh, Teetor, but I'll be in Florida a WEEK from this Thursday!

Maybe a repeat performance is just what you need to keep the grill in 'proper working order'!

I'll bring the wine!

I use my Weber gas grill year round, after every five or six uses I scrape off the grill top, flavorizer bars, grill body, drip pans etc. with a putty knife. If build up is real bad I'll let her go high for 30 minutes after food is done, let her cool down, then do the above scraping.

Re: Cleaning The Gas Grill

Put it in the back of the old ford pickup and take it to the car wash. While you are there, do the truck too. Works for me too!
