Car Enthusiast... I Need Opinion Pls

Anyone know the approximate value of a 1964 Dodge Dart? Doesn't have to be exact, just close. All original. Slant Six, with push button tranny.
Fair shape, no rust.

I know it isn't a muscle car, and definately not in the league of a Charger or Roadrunner, but is it worth fixing up for a teen's first ride? He's a Mopar nut.

Im not a Mopar expert, but if it's in decent condition inside and out, no rust, complete, I can see someone paying 4 or 5 thousand for a car like that. Could be more in this Barrett Jackson era.

Re: Car Enthusiast... I Need Opinion Pls

When I was a kid my mom had a '64 Dart with a slant 6, great car, the transmission buttons used to stick though. They're not really collectors cars, you need the V-8 for that, but send_it_all's price seems about right. I go to car auctions all the time and haven't seen one, but a few weeks ago I saw a '40's Dodge convertible that was in great condition go for under ten thousand, the old Dodges aren't really worth a whole lot unless they're rare or have the big motors. Here's a link to a '64 Dart, slant 6, California car, for $3,950, you can use as a reference.
http://adcache.collectorcartraderonl...1/89081611.htm

Found some others, looks like between $3,000 and $4,000 for one about as you've described.

Found a cool pic of one:

Re: Car Enthusiast... I Need Opinion Pls

Found this:
http://www.calcruisingauctions.com/1...-8ForSale.html
They have a price guide, but I think it's way off.

1964 Dodge Dart GT V-8 2 Door Coupe
#6 Condition - $1,000
#5 Condition - $3,250
#4 Condition - $5,400
#3 Condition - $8,800
#2 Condition - $11,900
#1 Condition - $18,000

Same site different price guide for same car:
http://www.calcruisingauctions.com/1...arForSale.html
#1 Condition - $38,000
I can assure you no '64 Dart is worth $38,000 unless there's $34,000 in cash sitting in the trunk.

Convertibles are almost always worth more.

Re: Car Enthusiast... I Need Opinion Pls

I figure with todays car market that any car new or old that runs is sold at over $2,000. It looks to be bigger and safer then any newer car we would be willing to buy him (neon, escort type cars) aside from an air bag that is. I know from my experience most first cars get wrecked some way or another. It also looks to be an easy repair if something breaks. A engine rebuild may run $1,000 in parts. It has no options and the engine compartment has enough room to stand in. He is 14 and I think could already do 60% of any repairs on it without help if he ever needed too. From what I can tell the only thing it needs to be road worthy is a new set of tires. Sure it could use some cosmetic work such as headliner and new seat covers.

I think we may go buy it today we got the guy down to $1,800. My step son really likes the old dodges so it's kind of a win, win from what I can see.

It looks to be in the #3 condition but with a slant 6 not the V-8 so $1,800 seems to be a fair price. It is also an orgional #'s matching car.

I still think it's right up there with one of the ugliest cars ever made though. Glad I wont be having to drive it around.

Next week your car will break down and the only thing to drive will be the dart.

Well the little ugly purple beast is sitting in the driveway. I drove it home about 5 miles. I will stick with A/C, power brakes, and power steering myself. But it's a dodge or at least part of one. Needs brakes, u joints, some weather stripping, interior work, and paint but other then that it seems to be ok. I still think with new interior and paint it's still gonna be just as ugly though.

I've got just the thing you need for that car in one of my sheds, A rebuilt 360 police interceptor.

That thing is SWEEEEEETT!!!! Yes, the 360 PI, or I was about to offer the 390! I don't have one personally, but it would make for a sweet ride. Easy fixes also. Not much computerism in that beast. Go kid!!!

WTF????

That's one double-ugly car. I hope your boy is a tough guy, because if I drove that when I was in school, I'd have gotten my butt beat on a weekly basis. Looks like something a 70 year old librarian would drive.

With a stock 360 PI that car will run a twelve second quarter mile.

Re: Car Enthusiast... I Need Opinion Pls

Everyone knows how durable the slant-six is. The slant made it so that the cylinder wear was more even than most other cars. Gravity countered the normal oval shape that regular engine cylinders develop as they age.

I think the smaller slant-six (170 vs the 225ci) is the engine that hotrodders liked to modify. They could be made to put out quite a bit of horse-power/weight. I recall reading that the modified engines were so good, that they were banned on some race tracks.

If the car starts giving problems starting and running, just replace the carb with a rebuilt. My brother did that recently and the car still runs almost as good as new.

I have to agree with those who don't like the looks of the car, although I sort of think the car is ugly enough to be kinda 'kool'.

One thing you gotta bear in mind this is the BEFORE photos. We just bought it and haven't made one single change yet. Wait until it's got a new paint job, some Mickey Thompsons etc.

The Dart isn't one of the muscle cars by any means, but it's vintage and a Mopar which is what our son goes crazy for. (Just see his "Mopar or no car" shirt for proof. haha)

It might not be the same in every area, but here, not meaning to sound arrogant or rude, but any teen with a classic car is higher on the totem pole than one with the late model sports cars.

It by far is not a true collectible but what parent in their right mind would turn a teen loose in a 'Cuda, Roadrunner or Charger? He can't even get his learner's permit for another two months when he turns 15. If there is ever a true Hemi in the driveway, it will be Momma's play toy not the teen.

Anywho.. thanks to all who commented, it's bought, and he's tickled to death with it. It's his baby now to soup up and dress up as he chooses.

That's probably okay for a girl. There's no way I'd give a son a car like that. Just read the police log in the paper, and it seems like new drivers have a wreck or two before they get the whole driving thing down pat.
