Re: Canadian Troops Fighting In Afghanistan

You know, what I find verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting is the whole drug growing issue in Afghanistan now. Back when we invaded I recall and I'm sure a lot of others do too about how one of the things people used to throw around (for whatever reasons they had at defending the Taliban back then, but you know how some people are!) was how the Taliban had reduced the poppy growing down to nothing because it was against the Talibans strict religious beliefs.

Now, it's the exact opposite, the poppy trade is bigger than ever and the reports are now that the Taliban is promoting the growth of poppies. Kind of a complete turn around on their religious beliefs don't you think? Perhaps a sign of religious beliefs being bent whenever it is best suited to advancing them politically huh?

Quote of the day from the article:

One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

Having guys hiding in the dope is one thing, being exposed to heroin is a totally different one. Both previous occupying armies, British and Russian, wound up with horrendous problems on this score. Many people believed it was actually a strategy of the Afghans to weaken the occupiers. And it worked!

Re: Canadian Troops Fighting In Afghanistan

The US was paying the Taliban to cut down on the poppy growing and exporting. Most of the heroin in the world had been coming out of Afghanistan ,smuggled into Europe then points global... Many terrorist groups such as the KLA (ethnic Albanians, muslims) Chechnyans were using the profits to help pay for their wars, and just good ol profiteering for the black market types in the region. So with the Taliban being ousted for the time being, getting opium production back on track will help them finance their war against the American led coalition, and put the farmers back in the cash. As well as getting more infidels hooked while helping to tie up man power and money to combat it.
Anyways the war on drugs is good for business. More cops, customs, money doled out for programs ,big money trail , military dole outs for the countries that export drugs such as Columbia ,Thailand.

War is business, and business is good.

Did anyone ever come up with a replacement for Agent Orange? I can think of quite a few places where it could be applied to advantage.

Don't we still use flamethrowers? Like we did in Veitnam...

That's bad for the environment. Not to mention all the birds that fly through the smoke, get stoned and crash into trees. PETA doesn't like that either, nor do the tree huggers that the trees might be getting injured by the stoned birds.
