Can YOU ring the bell?

We have a Renaissance Festival every year here in Arizona where people dress up and act along to the theme of the middle ages. At the Renaissance Festival they always have one of those swing the hammer and ring the bell deals. The sledge hammer in made of hard rubber and is probably around 10lbs or so.

You see these big buff guys go up to the thing and everyone thinks "Oh yeah this guy will ring the bell for sure." NOPE! Their feet are slightly apart and they are square to the bell tower. They bring the sledge up over their head and swing with all they got. Their hands together thru the whole swing.

Then I step up 6' 0" 210lbs(yes a chunky dude). My left foot in front right in back. My left hand at the bottom of the handle my right at the head of the sledge. Bring the sledge to my side with my hands apart and swing with my hands comming together at the end of my swing. DING!! Every time! The guy running the thing always tells me to come to the competition but my family is ussually tired before the competition at the end of the day.

Its funny you can always tell who has to use a sledge for his career when you watch. Who knew all those years of concrete forming would get you an audience and bragging rights. So.... can you guys ring the bell?

I've done it at the stampede before.

But now it's one of those things like george costanza. Hit a high note and leave the room.

After I rang it last time I officially retired from bell ringing.

Sounds like fun, those fairs, 'course it might have to do with all the beer in those huge steins you can buy from a "wench".

I can not think of a time that I have ever been to a fair, festival, etc that had one. But I can ring the bell at the concierges desk, does that count?

The last time I tried I was at Busch gardens,Tampa.I had a few of Auggies premiums and my daughter wanted me to ring the bell.I picked the big bulky hammer and evidently missed center, but when I missed it was a hell of an impact and my ex said half the folks including them nearly jumped out of their shoes.Wow factor !

I could when I was 13, after I learned the technique (which was somewhat different from driving fenceposts on the farm). It was all angle and aim; really not much actual force needed.

Thanks, that's a fun memory.
