Bonfire Explosion

I was sitting at the computer last night when the whole house shook. I went outside to find all the neighbors at their doorsteps. Turns out that when the fire department lit the fuel trail to start the blaze, vapors from the accelerant had built up inside the pile of pallets and caused one hell of an explosion. This was almost a mile from my house.

Firefighters prepared the bonfire with at least 15 gallons of diesel fuel, according to officials with Fire Company No. 5, and then later added another accelerant to the pile.
Investigators were ruling out an explosive device and were pursuing a theory that an accumulation of fuel vapors had ignited the blaze, according to Tomasso.

You'd think firemen would understand vapor build-up...

And here I was thinking that public bonfires were a non-PC thing of the past.

Re: Bonfire Explosion

The local fire department did that probably about 15 years ago at one of our bonfires before our home coming game. Engulfed the cheer leaders, football players, and a the two fire fighters lighting it. It also blew out the brand new windows in the press box. No one got hurt though, don't ask me how but no one did.

Re: Bonfire Explosion

A boyscout can light a fire with one match. Why the hell do you need 15 gallons of fuel to light a stck of dry pallets?

Idiots. They should have known better, it's their job.

Not to defend them, but the pallets were wet. It seems that with the high humidity and a fog setting in, the fumes of a secondary accelerant layed it the crater they had dug to contain the pallets. I agree, anyone with common knowledge should be aware of the potential for vapor build-up.
Thank God no one was seriously injured. My son was going to go with his friends, but decided not to at the last minute.
