Biggest Deer Ive Gotten

Followed him all through archery never got a shot. Out with my 10 yr old a couple times after squirrels and saw him. I was just about to head home to get warm this morning then bring the kid back out in the afternoon and he ran by. About 75 yds out in thick beech brush, had a hunter on road above me and below me closing in, knew he wasnt gonna get any closer with them so had to take the shot. Hit him a little further back on rib cage then i wanted but the end result is all the same.

Re: Biggest Deer Ive Gotten

Yeah ive gotten plenty of doe and a few ugly bucks before. Every year its getting harder and harder to find deer around here. Bear, coyote and a bunch of unconfirmed mountain lion sightings are on the rise though. Last time i hunted was 5 years ago, got a small 6 point and it took me 3 days to find someone to cut it up. Tonight i counted 16 deer on his driveway. Thats really sad for opening day of buck/doe rifle season.

LOL..I think Catt. county allows rifle hunting. We have too many Buffalo hunters here for anyone to be safe.

Did you have some help field dressing?

Nah i dressed it myself, kind of a braille thing. Ive done it before but this was a little rough with the borderline gut shot i had. 10 years ago or so we used to get a ton of flatlanders up from downstate, they were some crazy bastards. You didnt wanna be within 500 yards of a deer or you might catch a stray in your ass.

In PA all one needs do is drive. Many viable deer dead on the roadside.

I once on Route 30 had to pull over, pick one up and get its mangled, twisted leg, still kicking and scared to death ass off the road before one of us Humans died in an effort to not hit it again.

Deer make some strange noises when fighting for life whilst writhing in pain! Sounds I shall not soon forget!

I called the Coppers and they came and finished it off.

Those GD things are HEAVY and quite cumbersome!!

I thought maybe you were gonna give your kid an education....which I'm sure you did!

It's fun to kill a deer, but you have to clean and drag it too!!!!

If you have not the stomach nor the instinct as to how to stick the knife into the carcass, gut and drain it, then you have NO RIGHT to shoot it!

PERIOD!

Proper dressing can be learned from another, but waiting many days is just wrong.

It takes a bigger Animal to kill an Animal.

Nah im letting him take it all in first. The rules are goofy i guess i can let him shoot something as long as im right there but he doesnt need a license. I find that to be BS. When hes 12 he can take the hunters safety course get his license then he can carry a gun of his own. Right now im trying to get across all the aspects of hunting. From scouting, cleaning and eating all the way to just enjoying the fresh air and natures beauty. Then when he turns twelve and he wants to give it a shot then so be it.

I need to teach him not to be like me and walk so damn far into the woods. That long drag is gonna haunt me all week i think. I feel like an old timer, everything always seems to be uphill both ways, but instead of snow it was a couple feet of leaves.

I dont even notice em along the road up here anymore. When we first moved to the end of the road where we live it was like playing frogger with all the deer in the road. Now i see maybe 3 a week in the fields browsing.

Yeah, sorry man....That was my point (my bad for not being clear). There was never doubt in my mind jkfox knew how to dress a deer or is an ethical hunter.... I was poorly asking if he had his son/daughter help!

I don't hunt...believe it or not I'm a bird watcher, but I understand the necessity of hunting, and I don't look down on it. It's a way of life here.

I think the reason behind the goofy rules is to get the kids back in the woods. Our deer management program blows here in Pa. The insurance companies want them all dead for the same reason MALCO stated.

Nice little buck, probably 2, 2 1/2 years old? I usually shoot the smaller ones. Way over shooting at the big horns, they don't even make good soup. I left the woods about 10 this morning. I usually don't hunt in the rain and now I remember why. I was OK til the wind picked up. Oh well there's always tomorrow

Im telling ya, us rednecks believe in a game commision/insurance company conspiracy theory. Everyone things they stocked coyotes to thin the deer population and now they're stocking mountain lions. I didnt believe it but ive seen some pretty convincing pics locals have had of lions that PGC said was a large bobcat. My parents have had a coyote coming down every night within 200 feet of their backdoor. Just populated enough i cant get a good shot at it though.

Re: Biggest Deer Ive Gotten

I don't believe the mountain lion stories. Not saying that one might not pass though once in awhile, but they aren't here to stay. If they were you would really be hearing the farmers crying. We have problems with coyotes here also. Both sheep farmers and dairy farmers losing livestock to them......Never here about them losing out to the mountain lions though.

200' sounds like the perfect range for a 22 mag I shot 22 rabbits this spring from the garden. 350' from the house to the center of the garden, and I shot them all from the house.

22 Magnum....Kinda like a 22 on steroids I killed a woodchuck with it last year at about 160 yards. First shot over his head, second shot I held right on him so I could see where I was hitting. Third shot hit him, but didn't kill him. He flopped and ran about 20-25 feet adn I hit him again.

I have it sighted in at 80 yards dead on and am shooting about 2, 2 1/2" low at a 100.

My cousin just shot a rabbit at 258 yds with a 22-250. Very flat shooting rifle. He used his range finder to get the yardage, then let a shot fly. I wouldnt have believed it if I hadnt seen it. He's got a very nice leupold scope on it too.

Nice buck btw!
