Bad News, Good News.

Bad news; somebody ripped off my truck last night.
Good news; the cops caught the guys for some traffic violation before they had time to sell all of the stuff that was in it.
Bad news; the truck is impounded for 'processing'.
Good news; sounds like they have ALL of my tools.
Bad news; I have to drive about 2 hrs. (one way), reload everything and pay a fee of some kind to get everything back.
Good news; It sounds like the 'baddies' are going to take some time off, this is not their first gig.

Re: Bad News, Good News.

Teetor, same thing happened to me last week. Well, not as bad, they didn't get the truck, just my tools. Nothing that can't be replaced, but it still sucks. Highest dollar item to go was my PLS2 laser. I had to use a new tool pouch today, and I ain't happy, it didn't mold to my a$$ the way my old one did. And it just don't feel the same. The knucklehead also snatched a carton of smokes, my ashtray full of change, and a pack of AA batteries.

Anybody see a crackhead with a laser, smoking a Marlboro Light, hold him til I get there.

Well, - - congratulations anyway, Teetor, - - in the grand scheme of things, - - the good news outweighed the bad, - - 'possibly-worse' news. Overall, I'd consider myself pretty damn lucky.

I'm sure everyone has their own particular situations, - - but I'm forunate enough (at night, at least) to have a fenced, gated, and locked back yard that my truck gets kept in every night. And oh yeah, - - I almost forgot to mention the 'mongrel'!!

[Marc knocks on wood]

Luckily, I've never had a nickel's worth of anything stolen.

My dad, however, had his entire truckload of tools stolen while he ate lunch in a restaraunt. He was sitting in a booth no more than 20 feet from the truck. That takes some balls.

I've been lucky myself with tools and trucks. However, I have had some hand tools get "misplaced" by employees. And I guess over the years I have had some jobs stolen.

Re: Bad News, Good News.

Here's one for the good guys.

A buddy of mine who works for a power company runs an internet gaming server out of his garage. That's how we met, fellow gamers we. A guy smashes through his UNlocked patio door and steals his PC, the server, and other stuff.

The same night, this tard breaks into a store occupied by the owner who is hung-over and camping at the office. Eh....he passed out there. So anyhow, the store owner is roused from his drunken stupor to find this intruder. So he grabs one of those old timey cast iron shoe horn things from the Twenties and proceeds to beat the thief violently on his head until he quit moving. He called the cops, and everytime the thief would move he'd whack him on the head! LOL!

My buddy never got his stuff back, but that thief got the right meaning of "crack head".

Re: Bad News, Good News.

Everyone's dream...a buddy of mind had the privelege of walking into a 7-11 right behind the young punk who he had just watched park his stolen family station wagon. After the kid bought some smokes, my buddy followed him out and, when the kid opened the door of the car to get back in, beat him within an inch of death. The other two in the car ran off. The police report noted that the thief suffered numerous cuts and bruises from repeatedly falling to the ground during the struggle with the car's owner. Now that's justice.

A couple guys pulled up to a large construction site and popped their trunk. It was full of used tools for sale. Cheap. A buddy strolled over and took a peek inside. He spotted his stolen Skilsaw from a few weeks prior and the fight was on. He he...them boys got beat to hell by most of the crew and will think twice before stealing and selling a guy's livelihood.

But then, - - that's why no one, - - and I mean no one, - - should be buying tools from these jokers, (not saying you are) - - they're not only stolen from some hard-workin' guy such as yourself, - - yours may be next. When these guys pull up to me, - - I tell 'em to get lost, - - got no respect for 'sneak-thieves'.

Re: Bad News, Good News.

Life is a learning experience and I have learned a lot in 24 hrs.
Do not leave your dayplanner or checkbook in your truck. Make copies of all vehicular info and keep them in the truck, NOT the originals.
I just made this mistake and spent almost the entire day replicating it just so that I could prove that the vehicle was mine. The constables will not release anything without proof of ownership.
I found myself in a Catch-22 position. I had to prove ownership in order to access the information that proved that I had ownership. They also need verification that everything about the vehicle is to date, ins., licensing, etc. This works out to another day of contacting people, 3 cell phone recharges and visiting offices. All the while juggling calls from customers wondering why this or that is not getting done (I still keep my hands dirty) and the usual problems from major accounts.
I am assured that everything will be OK tomorrow except that I have to go through vehicle recovery first and property recovery second. The entire insides of my van have been tagged and bagged. At least I will have a chance to reorganize.

Amazing, ain't it?, - - crooks can steal your identity in a split second, - - yet it's damn near impossible to prove you are yourself.

Re: Bad News, Good News.

Teetor sorry your vehicle got all jammed up. It seems to me your state works differently than Illinois. Here is what i mean. If your vehicle gets towed through law enforcement here in Illinois. All you have to do is go to police department get a release for your vehicle take to towing yard hand it to them pay them your out of there. you do not have to prove ownership or anything. Why The police dept. established ownership when license plates were ran. I would go to police dept. if i was you and say i would like to get release to pickup my vehicle. If they say what are you talking about. I would go to da office at courthouse. Talk to ADA one phone call and you got your vehicle. YOU are a vic. and no vic. should be treated that way.

Re: Bad News, Good News.

I was told that this all has to do with the latest HSA/TSA. They have to check the entire vehicle for drugs/weapons.
I'm already in contact with my reps/so PO'D. 30 yrs. ago people would have died.

Re: Bad News, Good News.

I guess that I passed the drug/weapons screening. Picked up the truck this morning. Heard nothing but bitchin', I guess that it's the law that they have to put everything back inside and I had an oversized load of Hardiboard in there. The rest of the stuff was just thrown in there in boxes. I'm just taking a break for sorting everything out. So far I'm just out a small sander that was on its last legs and about $500.00+. I'm not counting lost time and for this aggravation, I'd charge double.
Because of jail conditions, the offenders were out the next day. Grand theft auto apparently doesn't rate that high.
