Too bad I quit drinking, toying around with a micro brewery was sorta a thought of mine I never got to.

I haven't quit drinking like Bob but have toyed around with the idea for years. I have 3 friends that have tried it and one even made some grade A brew. The other two turned into amusing anidotes.

I've never brewed my own beer however I have made wine successfully. My Father makes it as a hobby and makes some very good (and strong) wine too. Mine's never been as good as his but when I buy a house I might start to make a few bottles a year for special occasions.

That's cool. A friend of mine from Ohio does the same thing. He makes it out of various fruits and berries, but not grapes. If your not careful, the stuff'll mess up your head pretty quick. Nothing like drinking strawberry wine right from the canning jar

I once worked in a house and the owners had half their basement full of those 5 gal office water cooler bottles brewing their own wine. I couldn't believe it. There must have been about 70 gallons of wine fermenting down there. They said they do it as a hobby and give it away as gifts!

Wine just sits there, beer is much more fun because it can be explosive!

I'm really surprised that there are not more DIY brewers. Temperature is what restricts me.

No... You are in NJ or Chicago? You just described my father to a T. Back when I was a kid he really used to mass produce the stuff. He had 10 5 gallon bottles full of fermenting wine and you couldn't help but take a whif when walking in the house.

Last night I stopped by the old man's house and he has a 25 gallon can of fermenting apples. I guess this year is apple wine. Last year was peach and boy oh boy did my wife's family love the peach stuff... and it's creeps up on ya. I think only my old man and I are the only people who can handle more than a few glasses without being flat out drunk.

Infact I toasted at my wedding with my father's peach wine instead of champagne.

Next year I am going to do it. I have been saving all the non twist top bottles. A buddy's uncle is a brewmiester and brews come good ales. He makes and sell's it at his resturant. He even licensed one of his recipes to be sold at a local home brew shop HomeBrew Heaven.

Eagle Brewing's Golden Ale.

Me too I'm trying to settle on a recipe.

I've become bored with all but a few 'brand label' beers and I'm thinking that homebrewing will add some fun back into beer drinking. We'll see.
In the meantime I've taken a liking to an occasional

with a good one of these
.

But that can't take the place of an ice cold brew. I want to have a batch ready in March.

Re: Anyone Brew'n Their Own?

What brew equipment kit are you going to start with? I am still looking though the deluxe kit at HBH is a good buy without having to pay shipping costs.

A recipe for me will be a blonde/golden. I was lurking at a homebrew forum this year before I bought the house. I have to find their addy again.

Homebrewtalk.com (why are they alway ripping Nathan off? )

Re: Anyone Brew'n Their Own?

The successful guy that I spoke of used Grolsch bottles with the bail type top. When he would need more bottles, he'd go buy a few cases and force all of us to drink it. Riley's not a bad guy!

The least successful was in Ft. Laud and he used a capper. He stacked all of the bottles in the back of a closet which was the closest thing that he had to a 'cool, dark area'. All was well and good until the AC bit the dust one day when he was at work. The temp inside went up and the caps started popping, big stinkin' mess.

Grolsch is one of those I still enjoy. That's a good idea. Thanks.

Re: Anyone Brew'n Their Own?

My Grandfather used to brew beer and had that explosion problem, COOL! My dad made wine from grapes we picked on the side of the road. Is that a desperate housefather excuse? This was all before "cherry pickers". (who came up with that name?)

I've brewed beer and it was gooood and stroong. But the weight gain I had was unbelievable. It was like eating 25 pizzas in a hour. But it sure tasted good.

I've also made mulberry wine in Africa, which "worked" too long and turned into some awesome vinegar. So I marinated a bunch of steaks and had some friends over. They claim they never had a finer, more tender piece of steak.

So the key is make wine into vinegar and buy cheap meat and your friends will love you! As some really smart guy said, " the fasted way to succeed is to double your failure rate". He had to be a contractor.

Brew on brother!!!
