Any Other Morel Mushroom Hunters Out There

Well I unexpectely found the first Morel Mushrooms of the season yesterday. Six nice greys bigger than my thumb right outside the shop door. With all this rain and warm temps it should be a bumper crop this year.

Re: Any Other Morel Mushroom Hunters Out There

There are usually a lot of people harvesting them commercially around here. If you don't have a commercial license, you have to cut them in half when you find them so you can't sell them. I think you are also suppose to have a permit even for private use.

They used to have a mushroom festival in the Bohemian Neighborhood around Cicero or Berwyn Illinois, which they called the Hobie Festival.

My Dad used to get into that stuff all the time, the Old Bohock.

Re: Any Other Morel Mushroom Hunters Out There

They are a much anticipated Spring delicacy for us. Bread em up and eat them with fresh scrambled farm eggs and biscuits mmm-mmm good.

Many people gladly pay $20 a pound or more for a good mess. How much are the commercial morels going for in your area? I have never heard of a supplier for those as there are other varieties. After we eat so many that we are sick we freeze the rest for winter months and do it over again.

I eaten red mushrooms that were bigger than a 5 gallon bucket but our morels are only averageing 6-8" tall if your lucky. I would really like to read about those commercial operations groing them. That is almost to good to be true

I wish I knew more about what good eating mushrooms looked like and what poisonous one's looked like. I worked with a man that would find "beef eater" mushrooms all the time. Those suckers tasted like a steak when he fried them up. My wife and I like to go for walks in the woods, and we come across patches of mushrooms all the time, but I have no idea what type it is I'm looking at. My luck, I'd fry some up, eat them, and you'd be reading my obituary next week.

A friend of mine from the past, put himself through college growing mushrooms in his basment.

After college, he went into business selling the leagal kind and made a ton of money on some kind of Japanese sounding variety.

this is a little north of where I grew up, but it gives the general idea-

The Bitterroot Valley is where I'm from.

A lot of the commercial guys are hauling the mushrooms in laundry hampers with backpack straps, and they are filling many baskets a day.

Basically all you need to grow good mushrooms is to treat them like a bad GC. Give them plenty of sh$$ and keep them in the dark.

the morels are pretty unmistakable...look very much like coral, or a brain. Remember, morels have hollow caps and stems, not fleshy caps like "false" morels. happy hunting! soak them in salt water before you eat them!

Re: Any Other Morel Mushroom Hunters Out There

I used to go after them with one of my uncles in IN. When I bought the NC house he would follow them down until he got to my place and we'd go after them there. He passed away 10 yrs. ago and I hardly get up to NC anymore.

We still have the cow pastures down here. NOT morels but a lot more zip to them, they can keep you happy for half the night. Not that I do that anymore.
