Animals Always Make You Laugh
NO matter how bad a day has been or how tomorrow looks, an animal can always offer a smile or laugh.
I have a 1700 sq ft shop I spend a fair amount of time puttering in. My Phat Cat is always with me, black & white, maine coon cat. My doberman, 122 lbs, then a house rat, the Peekenese, all spoiled and have made me a good pet to them. Then I have about 6 stray cats that has showed up here sick & close to death over a year ago. (they showed up at different times, but all were so sick when first discovered them here & got them back to good health) The doberman plays great with each one of them, the peek as well. (pics posted later) I head up to my shop I feel like the pied piper, the strays all stay up there & when I head up they run out to meet me & run around feet all the way to the door & inside. Never have seen a mouse or snake in or around there, so they pay for themself. The 3 pics posted here are one that I said wtf??? one of the strays nursing off the peek, (no the peek has never had a litter). Buddy, hiding one day when it was vet time. I guess he thought, hide in plain sight & I would not see him. Yeah he blends right in with the bleech & box of trash bags in an old cab in the shop. He knows if he hides in plain sight I will look forever & never find him. (wife taught him that, Presents or anything she never wanted me to see or find, leave out in sight, I would never notice it) I put some pet beds out there for the cold nights. these 3 strays sleep together.

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
Here is a pic of my Doberman, (All the dobies I have had, after the first one having his ears clipped, I have never done that again)
He runs loose on the property til I have to leave. The other day trying to get him to get in his pen before I left, he was being to funny, hiding behind the tree & plants. Then the peek was giving him ideas on how to ignore me..

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
I like your photos. Animals always bring a smile to peoples faces, unless you're stepping in their poop.
I don't want to rain on your parade, you don't have a Maine coon cat anywhere in those pictures. I hope someone didn't tell you that to make you pay for one.

I dunno for sure or even 40% certainty myself, but based on what the vet believes and has him listed as is all I know. The vet has always treated the mother cat who is a 100% maine coon cat, per the vet. To me, I never paid a dime for him. The owner dropped off a litter of kittens one day old at the vets office, told him to put them down or what ever, instead of being responsible pet owner, she never had the mother cat spayed. My wife happened to be in the office that day to pick up the ashes of her dog she had put down due to old age. Seeing these kittens & the vet's assistant explained the situation, my wife along with the vet's assist and another agreed to take turns bottle feeding them from then on instead of having them put down. In turn she was able to keep the kitten & recieve full free vet care for the 1st year, 20% discount next year, 10% the 3rd year. By the time this kitten was 5 months old my wife passed away. After all she put into this kitten when I decided to give it to a good home, I could not and have had it since, now 4 1/2 years old. Maybe you missed your calling in not becoming a vet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine_Coon The Maine Coon is generally noted for its large bone structure, its rectangular body shape, and a long, flowing coat. The breed can be seen in a variety of colors and are known for their gentle personalities

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
Burb, those are nice photos, thanks. I could not agree more, animals always make me smile no matter what life brings. People who dont share that respect and appreciation for animals, are people i dont trust. (but thats a whole other story). G

Re: Animals Always Make You LaughQuote:
I'm sure you have seen animals that typically are the most freindly animals one could hope to have for a pet, yet some people cannot be in the same area with this animal, simply because that animal senses dishonesty in that person and wants him/her to know it be best to be stepping away. Cats have never been a pet of choice for me, until this phat cat. I guess in part because of he was something my wife had so much of her time in. I spent 4 1/2 months in ICU, day & night with only 1 to 2 hours of exception being away, with my wife with her never going more than 3 days without crashing, being so close to death, I was asked by the doctors to call in the family. Each time I would tell them, trust in her, she will come out of this as well. I am heading home to shower, check on the pets, update the family and return, no joke, Docs & nurses still at MUSC today from that time, knows of the bond her & I had and the times I did this. 4 days prior to her going into multi-organ failure, after 4 1/2 months of this, with me never having a doubt that she would not come home, I emailed her Docs & thanked them for all they had done without ever giving up or even a mention of doing so, I more than anyone hoped I was wrong about my feelings. but was not. But to my point. The few hrs I would return home to care for pets, shower & maybe get 2 hrs rest. That phat cat, only months old at that time, would let me doze for about 2 hrs max, then wake me by chewing on my nose or head til I woke up. Prior to this, that kitten would never be held, even by my wife who bottled fed him from 1 day old. He would eat then run off once old enough to do so. So for him to do this each time I dozed off, I found so amazing as time went on. Even after, that cat always seemed to know when I was upset or hurting, it was the only time he would jump in my lap and keep pressing his head against my heart, until I patted, played with him and began to smile or laugh, then off he would go one more time.. Still to this day he does this. I have never seen or heard of a cat being as this, to this degree.

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
Nah....just from Maine. Have had quite a few Maine coon cats. They're big, they look like raccoons, their tail is really long, so is their hair. I'm sure the technical meaning is wider than what I consider. Either way, you have great looking animals there. We have only 2 left on the farm right now. We had 4 with a dog. Never saw snakes or mice like you say. Ones getting old, the other is just stoopid.

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
For me, my dogs are like having a blood pressure and stress lowering pill all in one. I have three, one of them comes to the job sites with me when I can take her, if the clients are dog friendly and there's a good place to keep her teathered and safe.
And I had a cat who wandered into my shop one day and stayed for about three years and then moved on or died, never found out what happened to her. She would sleep through anything, table saw, planer, didn't faze her a bit. I have some homeless people in my neighborhood who hang out near the grocery and ask for money. Several of them have dogs tied to their shopping carts. I say no to the money, but give them canned dog food on my way out. Maybe that says something about my social priorities, I don't know. Here's two of my stink hogs: |

Re: Animals Always Make You LaughQuote:
Here in SC, after my wife passed away, I got out of our house we lived in from 90 thru 2003, leased it out, bought me another house, a 1922 bungalow with 2 acreas & a 1700 sq ft garage/shop, out in the country, it has a small stream that runs down one side of my property with a swamp not far away. Horse farms & woods are all around here. In or anywheres within reason of any swamp inland SC water mocs are very common as well as a wide variety of other snakes. Mice, I would assume because of all the horse farms, woods, & fields, as well as this place having been closed down for about 3 years, and with me being away 3 to 4 days per week, no other activity here, there just may be a possibility of mice & or snakes looking for feed or winter nesting areas. As far as my initial mention of snakes & mice, there never was a mention of "amount of", just "I have never seen any here", especially with as I described above being so close to water, woods, feilds, & farms. In hopes it any do come around, the stray cats will then earn their keep and I continue to not see any. When I contacted animal control to have the strays removed, they would, but also because of the overload at animal shelters from non-responsible pet owners and or people who no longer wish or can care for their pets, droping them off there, they are overloaded and with all certainty would be put down. My choice was to get them healthy & allow them to hang here in hopes one day I will find owners for them. If not, they will live here. All the strays live & stay at the garage/shop so they harm nothing. If you look at the link I pasted it explains maine coon cats come in a variety of colors, their long hair, long fluffy tails, and distinct ear feathers as they are called,(long hair in their ears to me) large bone structure, round face, ect ect as phat cat has. And again, to me he is just a great cat, the vet who cared for the mother cat as well as her other cats since she began breeding for sale here in the Charleston area, is the one who stated the breed of the cat as well as has on his vet history papers as the breed. She just got sick of breeding them and somehow allowed the mother cat while in heat to get pregnant again. The racoon looking coon cat as you explain is a common coon cat as well, but again open that link and you will see a "WIDE" variety of them.. And yes the doberman is AKC registered as a full breed, the peek as well, even though not a party colored peek. The post was intended as something different during these times and in hopes to give some a reason to smile or laugh when they recall their pets and the strange things they may have done to offer their owners that moment to remember, so to speak.. ![]() With the pic below, if i say bird bath, would that be wrong as well if refered to as a cat bath?

Re: Animals Always Make You LaughQuote:
Your property sounds great, and a 1700 square foot shop, dang, what I could do with that! I barely have 500 sq. ft. and that's taken up mostly by storing tools and gear. If I want to build anything in there, I have to un-ass the entire place. Great idea for a thread by the way. Last edited by Bodger; 12-21-2008 at 02:11 PM. |

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
Hey Burby, love dobermans my self, and with the uncropped ears and tail, no one can really tell what they are, unless they got the colour, but your dog looks overweight a bit, and those dogs come with hip dysplasia so look out for that, i suggest some greens and glucosamine and chondroitin with lots of omega 3,6,9 and if you can get your hands on some Hyaluronic acid

Re: Animals Always Make You LaughQuote:
I had one die from this and is how I learnt about it, I have had superior size dobies for almost as long as I am old, they are great, loyal pets. He is in excellent shape, just putting on his winter weight & will drop about 5 lbs to 118 for summer weight. Nice thing about them looking as they do with the ears & tails is when your ins man comes around, Sad but they are on that top 10 dogs list to prevent you getting homeowners ins without paying 10 xs more than it should & that is they will even insure you.. If I am home & outside, no matter who you are you can walk up the drive and he will be like your pet. If I am in the house or away, even ones that know me and visit regularly will not get out of their car or truck, he becomes all teeth and that infamous growl. With kids, including babies to all these lil kittens around here, he is so gentle & plays with them all the time.

Re: Animals Always Make You Laugh
hahaha, it is funny watching a large dog & a small dog when they live together & the roles each take.. You have 2 extremes, a gental Lab and a hyper snapper.. I bet they do offer more laughs than not.

Burby, sounds like you are describing my dog! They are the greatest, they do not deserve the bad rep. I have owned dobes for 30 years. They also make great work dogs!

Re: Animals Always Make You LaughQuote:
Until one summer a few years ago. Spent three months building an addition for a family with three young kids and a Rottweiler. She was great with the parents, absolutely super with the kids, and only very begrudgingly put up with me as long as one of the parents was within ten feet or so. I never did get through that shell. One of the few dogs in my life I ever felt seriously uncomfortable with turning my back on... |
