I wouldn't be shocked, or ask questions. I would march straight downstairs and kill my daughter. Either that, or make her work off the 85k.

My son once spoke to his sister in Vienna for an hour. $485 later and he learned his lesson. He's over 21 and not my problem anymore.

Re: $85k Mobile Phone Bill

I haven't used a mobile phone as a modem in years, but I used to do it all the time. It was simple: you paid for data services and hooked up through a local ISP. I had Sprint back then, and paid $10 a month for the service, plus airtime. I never went over my minutes, so the charge was never huge. Either things have changed since then, or the Canadians are getting bent over.

Yes, cell phone coverage costs more here than in the US. But consider that we're twice the land mass with a 10th of the population. There's a lot of extra towers.

I signed up with an unlimited data plan with a provider a few years ago for $50/month. Then they got bought but grandfathered the plan in. It's the ONLY actual unlimited data plan that was ever really available. So every time the contract comes up I just tell them to keep it and make no changes. Pisses them off, but hey, not my problem

Re: $85k Mobile Phone Bill

The cost difference is in -->> cell "voice" rate versus "data" server rate. Voice rate is always much more expensive because it goes through call centers and expensive leased lines from/to local offices of national telephone companies that owns it. Data rate goes through a less expensive cable/optic/internet/ traffic routing networks & servers and less expensive leased lines.

When we are in voice rate plan, they use different voice channels, but when we switch to data plan, they switch to data channels at higher data/packet speeds.
