"The Media" has a hard time reporting anything that could be considered good news...They had no problem over the summer telling us about how the "experts" where predicting 8.00/10.00 gas by the end of the year...And where is the bird flu epidemic that we should all be dead from by now?And don't get me started about the total lack of any positive reporting when it comes to the military.

Lehman Brothers? I guess it doesn't count the people already laid off.

i saw google in that list and then i remembered something
http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/2...oogle-layoffs/
Quote:
If Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry is right, Google’s (GOOG) latest 10-Q is more prophecy than financial guidance, more foreknowledge than forecasting.
In a dismal research note issued this week, Chowdhry suggests Google is headed for a two-year revenue contraction, one that could force the company to sack as much as 15 percent of its staff. “Our research indicates that the challenging macro-economic conditions continue to worsen Google’s advertisement driven Consumer Internet business,” Chowdhry writes. “Contacts tell us that Google is benefiting from the shift in ads from traditional media to digital media, however this shift is not sufficient to overcome the downward macro-economic pressures. Contacts also tell us that online users are selectively tuning off the right side of search results, which are sponsored links. This may reduced the number of paid clicks, which in turn may negatively impact Google’s revenues.”

Just because a company is laying off in one department dosen't mean they are not hiring in another.

I'm optimistic too. But I need to generate some good leads. My phone is not ringing.

Good to see Countrywide, one of the major players in causing this recession, is doing well, hopefully all the people that bought houses they couldn't afford are rewarded with 0% loans and a fruit basket.

Re: 100 Companies That Are Not Laying Off But Hiring During This Recession.

I also noticed Swift Transport inc. on that list. Of course they are hiring.

They pay drivers (the people that do the real work) .25 a mile on average and limit miles to 1800 a week per driver.

Why only 1800 miles a week? Drivers can LEGALLY drive 2500 a week.

Swift,Schnieder National, J.B. Hunt all haul freight for .75 per mile. They then put that freight on Railroad for .025 per mile and make money. Drivers then run from rail yard to receiver. This kills the freight price and runs smaller companies and Independants out of business.

I'm sure thats good for the economy!!

The average driver has a tax rate of .175 after per diem.

The average driver spends $125.00 a week on living expenses just on the road; food, clothing, bathing, phone calls, extras...

1800 x .25 = $450 pre tax
$450 x .175 = $78.75
$450 - $78.75 - $125.00 = $246.25

Now think about this fact. Average driver days home per year is 12. That means drivers get to see wives, kids, moms, dads, girlfriends 12 days a year.

Lets break that down to a per hour figure now.
8472 hours per year on the job
$12,312.50 a year pay
$1.45 per hour

How can trucking companies NOT be hiring?

I'm sorry this seems like a thread highjack but it really isn't if you think about it.

Chris Dodd and Barney Frank say hi. They're both doing very well.

Many of those companies use temporary agengies to fill most of their workload. I'll research it a bit more a bit before I feel all rosey...

I agree with the rest of your post, but it's possible to legally drive much more than 2500 miles in a week.

11x65x6=4290, allowing for 68mph trucks, and a day a week off to reset the log under the 34 hour rule.

Of course, this is all optimal, back when I drove, I averaged 2700 a week, and spent a total of about 60 days at home per year. Could have done more miles if I didn't want to be with my family as much.

I have to agree with you, but thats another thread.

I was OTR for 15 years, had some 600 mile weeks and some 5000 mile weeks but it generally averages around 2500 or less.
