Wall liner over paneling?
Would some sort of paintable textured wall liner material be a good solution over cheap early 80's photofinish paneling? My problem is that I'm faced with several thousand square feet of photofinish paneling that has had various posters, flyers, etc that were put up with tape taken down, removing the finish. The finish of this stuff is non-repairable. My options are to remove the paneling and drywall, paint the paneling, or try wall liner. Anyone done it before to know how good of a result I might get from wall liner? I'd probably look for 54" goods if I thought it was worth having a sub try for me.

I have filled grooves, primed, patched and sprayed texture on wall panels and turned out very well. The house was empty, no carpet. I am going to try the liner this winter, I did order the sample, looks like it will work out well, easier in an occupied home.
One thing to consider if you drywall is the outlets, you may have to get a filler so they fit. Under some panelling it may only be furring strips, not studs.

I've used this stuff over cracked plaster and
acoustic ceiling tile.
These folks have very friendly customer service,
they'll answer any questions and send you a
big enough sample for you paper hanger to
experiment with.

I don't know about wall liner but I had a job like this and I was able to apply 1/4" drywall over the whole mess and finish it off with mud, tape and texture.
It saved the customer lots of time and money on demo and labor. There are some things yo need to think about in advance like how to contend with the electrical boxes and plates and such but this is very do-able.

hanging over paneling
Hanging over that cheap panel can be done but you need to keep a couple of things in mind. Screw and nail any loose areas first. Putting a liner and then painting/texturing is probably the easiest to do. If you want to do a liner then have vinyl over that keep in mind the moisture from the paste will cause the paneling to expand. I've done it a couple of times and pasted the wall and dry hung the vinyl, this allows some of the moisture to evaporate before trapping it under the vinyl. I would also try to use a lightweight vinyl.

Prime the paneling first preferably oil. At least a good acrylic. I have done a lot of it. The more texture the better also. Skip trowel would be the best choice. Mike

I've skim coated it successfully in the past, then some type of artsy 'rag finish' or whatever because i'm not perfect at skim coating, and it was a rental anyway.
What'll kill you on this if you add any layers is the electrical guys will clean your clock and suck your wallet dry. .
Crap, just noticed I got sucked into some prehistoric post.
