Exclamation 54" vinyl in new hotel

Seems that every hotel in NM is getting a facelift, and there arent enough paperhangers to go around. I hang mostly luxury wall linens / silks, and have always been able to charge by the hour, as the number of yards installed per hour varies due to the pattern, wall height, and material type. Anyway, an owner of a hotel being built out of my state has contacted me and asked for a price per yard. Job total is 1600 yards. Paste and material is on-site, price is for labor only.

I crunched some numbers, dividing the number of yards I could hang per hour, keeping a reasonable pace in empty rooms, and came up with $7.75 per yard. He replied that the "going rate" for contractors who do nothing but hotel facelifts is $3.50 per yard!!!!

Am I up in the night with my price???? Please, any help will be appreiciated

More Info from Midas (Poster)

I created this topic a 1 in the AM. Here's some more info on this. Owner is wanting a labor price for the Square Yard, not the Lineal Yard. I figure the useable width after trimming is 48", which makes each lineal yard actually 1.33 Sq Yds. Should this be bid by the Square or Lineal Yard??????

I will admit that I am insulated from market prices for this. I worked for 7 years doing this and decorative painting as en employee for a corporation that wasn't interested in cometitive bids. They asked for a time estimate and then said "Go." They later became more "competitive" by changing us to preferred contractors, but only the same 8 people are ever invited to bid (Its a security thing for them). They are now about 60% of my overall work. Thus, I am a bit ignorate of the marketing side of this trade.

Do the math however you need to. Figure out how long it will take you. Then figure out how much you want to get paid. Then divide that total by whatever measurement the hotel owner wants it measured in.

We charge 8 per yard labor only. Linear yard ,you will loose your behind at 3.50. Of course it depends on the bath and dressing area's that's what takes the time. Good luck. MOPAINT

What are we talking about, square yards or linear yards in these posts? In a 9'x9' area which measures 81 square feet there are 9 square yards or 6 linear yards. So in bidding they are not the same thing.

If I charge $6 per square yard that is 9sq.yds x $6 = $54 to get the same pay when calculating in lin. yds I'll have to charge $9 per linear yard. $9 x 6 lin yds = $54

I use to be in the paper hangin bussiness, and in my state I did several Ponderosa restaurants and at that time I was getting $3.50/yd. You can not estimate your total yardage on net yards, commercial vinly 54" you made a coment of netting 48" in width and you can not measure a job based on that. Simply tell this guy you need to get say $6/yd. you have to remember you still have a vechicle, gas, blades, sponges, insurance to pay for and the way things are today nothing is cheap, not even your wages !!! Good luck.
