Removing Suede Faux Finish
Hey guys,
I am finishing a basement that used to have RL suede finish on it. I did not do anything to 2 of the walls and they still have the suede finish on them. my client does not want the suede finish any longer. Any quick tips on how to eliminate this? Can it be painted over? thanks jeff |

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
You might be able to get away with using a high build primer over it and then your new finish coat. If you use flat paint it may hide some of the sued that is still present.

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
There is no paint that will smooth this out, you will need to sand lightly and then skim out the walls, then prime and re skim spots and then paint the walls.

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
Mr. Mike is right. It may be hard to sell that to the HO because it is going to be expensive, but that is really the only way to get rid of it completely.

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
I would knock it down with a variable speed orbital sander first, then skim as Mike described above. Anything to make it a little easier to skim coat.

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
Here's a different angle: Upsell the customer on a new and better faux finish (perhaps using a light texture) and go right over it. Or if you don't do faux, sub it out and take a juicy referral fee.

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
I have no personal experience, but after calling Glidden with this exact same issue they recommended i just paint over the suede finish. Its not a very agressive texture so i can't see it being too much of an isue.

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
id talk it over with the HO'ers first and lay out some options as far as price goes and see what level of finish they were interested in
option 1- sand and paint it.....cheapest option, finish will reflect the price option 2- sand it first.........there isnt much to suede, after sanding i would paint it with wall flat then skim the bad areas if there even is any..........this option would produce a ''good'' finish and be easy on the wallet option 3- sand then skim the entire wall..........base coat then top coats......more expensive option with a superior finish.... take it to level 5 if they had the money and wanted it |

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
The RL is a smooth finish but if the walls are gritty and RL was used
to hide wall problems , you will have to work on walls with the RL not being the reason. of worry. still use a primer like Grips or Kilz then fix walls with a mud skim sand it re prime it |

Re: Removing Suede Faux Finish
I did a whole house of that, hilarious it was, it was about 1500 sq he had it in four major rooms and the main hall. It wasn't done nicely as that sand paint is not too reliable, and I think they did 2 or 3 coats, damn ugly. Then he wants to sell, I used the carbide scraper for the heavy edges and then block filler with a top coat of low sheen paint. I can't say it was perfect but any place where if you got drunk bumping face first in the wall and then spend all that time at emergency for facial injuries..... It was at least an improvement.
