Faux Painting Over Rust
I have been asked to paint on a rusty iron bench to make it look like another bench that has been naturally weathered. The rusty look is what I am going for, but I don't know if I can paint over rust and have the paint stick to it. What should I do to prepare the surface and protect the final finish?

Re: Faux Painting Over Rust
You need to scrape off the loose rust and then prime it with a rust inhibitive primer. Phospho will probably work well because its very thin and converts the rust to not-rust. I would suggest using oil products to do the faux work because of durability and rust resistance.
